The Cottagers open their doors to The Gunners

Games come thick and fast at this time of the year and this evening’s match against Fulham follows hot on the heels of Saturday’s one nil win  at home to QPR.

Founded in 1879 Fulham Football Club are the oldest professional team in London.  They have played at their Thames-side home, Craven, Cottage, since 1896.  The ground almost always gets a mention as the crews pass by in the University boat-race and in years gone by the game would be halted as the crowd turned round to watch and cheer the light and dark blues.

Fulham have never won a major honour although in 1975 they lost 2-1 to West Ham in the FA Cup Final and lost, after extra time and by the same score, to Atletico Madrid in The Europa League Final.

Despite their lack of silverware they have featured some illustrious names in the past, such as,  Sir Bobby Robson, Johhny Haynes, George Best and Rodney Marsh.

Sir Bobby Robson

1933-2009

The current owner and Chairman is Mohamed Al Fayed whose “Glorious Tenure” (his own words) began in 1997 and led to their promotion to The Premiership in 2001.  By no means a modest man, the former owner of a Knightsbridge corner shop (Harrods), Al Fayed has presided over probably the most successful  period in the clubs history.

Fulham’s Dutch manager, Martin Jol, has Premiership experience having managed another London club (whose name escapes me) from 2004 to 2007.

Currently lying thirteenth in The Premiership their home record is pretty consistent having won, drawn and lost three each and scored fourteen whilst also conceding the same number.

More injury woes for The Gunners defence, Thomas Vermaelen limped off with a calf strain and will miss two weeks, this was after being wrongfully booked by referee Martin Atkinson who mixed him up with his look-a-like colleague Laurent Koscielny.

It’s likely that Coquelin will come into the backline as a direct replacement for our Belgian star, if this is the case he will need someone more prepared to track back, than Arshavin, in front of him.

 Starting Eleven

 Szczesny

 Djourou    Meretesacker   Koscielny    Coquelin

Ramsey    Song    Arteta

 Walcott    Gervinho

Van Persie

This is another eminently winnable match and although it kicks off just forty-eight hours after Saturday’s final whistle a victory will confirm the Glorious Gunners in fourth place.  After the grisly start to the season what better way to start 2012.

 Final Thought

Is Cottager an acceptable nick-name given it’s less than savoury connotations in Polari slang.  (Google it!)

How about this equation…… 2011 – 1961 is how many years since spurs won the league? Or this one…… Arsenal won 13 league titles, Spurs have won 2. What is the difference between number of titles won??

Aside from the shocking refereeing display of which Probert has previous, we were our own worst enemy yesterday. Was at the game and like so many of late, we created chance after chance in the first half to kill the game. Walcott has not looked right for the last couple of games and the Ox should now be given a chance. Gervinho will be a quality player once he adds finishing to everything else he does well, bu was wasteful again yesterday. And in the second half, our midfield was overrun by Fulham. For me, Coquelin did really well at left back and got forward well and defended well also. But it is clear that the injuries are now taking a toll and we need to get some cover in. Lets hope AW is looking now.
4th place is still well and truly up for grabs as the only 2 consistent sides are City and United.

Ha Ha ..yeah after missing 68 sitters in the last 4 months I am convinced Gervinho will come good too !..shut up you mug, any bloke missing a volley from 4 yards like yesterday is wank fella..wank !..you should have known he was a wenger dud when he missed a sitter at the lane and corkscrewed wide from 6 yards, I agree cockelin looked quite handy and you worked hard closing down in packs everywhere but Mertsacker once again showed how shit he is, 6ft 5 and is as much use in the air as ronnie corbett, arteta is just wank, djorou got raped, hope bale gets a go at him soon and generally you ignore the obvious, Foolham (who we humped) were getting the ball and running through 6 players in the first half, straight through the heart of your side, you aint good enough ! and until you stop dreaming and accept that wenger has done you lot over you will only feel more pain..loving wenger having a little moan again, the geezer has no humility..always someone elses fault, he has 60,000 fans paying him the highest revenue per head in the country, gazillions in the bank so we hear, and he is signing toilet last minute panic buys….as you lot said when stoke done us, tough shit do i find it funny ? you bet !

Another genius reply. Is your memory that short? Gareth Bale, useless, couldnt win a game. Was on his way put of the club. Redknapp didnt rate him at all and was happy to get rid. So dont go writing off players too soon. And also, you have Adebayor, your best player, who could easily be described in the same way you described Gervinho. And he is the finished article.

Poor result this. The same old problems – good going forward but no end on product and still likely to concede. Meratasacker scares the life out of me. I’m old enough to remember Willie Young and that’s who he reminds me of, and if that doesn’t worry you than nothing will. I never rated Gervinho after seeing him in the world cup, and sadly he has not done anything to change my mind. Walcott frustrates the life out of me and we’re carrying too much deadwood like Arshavin, Rosicky and Chamack. Santos is not a bad footballer but he is not a great left back. Gibbs is always injured as is Diaby so what is the point of keeping them?

There are positives, you defended very well in packs, made things difficult around the area, but sadly Mertsacker did his usual and just capitulated, there is a lot of dead wood but why is it not being replaced with quality ? something in the boardroom is still amiss, the club are now gambling RVP’s future and Wengers credability in the next 5 months, it doesn’t add up..

We can still make 4th. Chelsea and Liverpool not convincing either. Agree to a certain extent on Mertesacker, but he is still only 4 months into his career here and there is time to get it right. Everyone wrote off Kos last year and he is one of the best CB’s in the league this year.

And spurs are much better than us this year. Their key men have stayed fit and it makes a big difference.

Said all year you can make 4th and I think you will, it will be tough if AVB goes out and spends big in Jan, is benayoun on loan ? he could do worse than recall him if nothing but to stop you lot finishing above him, I still think Benayoun could be the key to Torres, now it seems unlikely Modric will be leaving for the bridge, the one thing they have over you is goals from all areas, RVP is becoming a lonely stat and that is so not Arsenal only 6 years ago any number of 7 players could get on the score sheet, is that indictive of the way you play ? perhaps ? there are not too many having a pop shot with gervinho being the biggest culprit..jack will make a difference, I despise Chelsea and would sooner you guys do it than them to be fair..always hated chelsea I tolerate gooners but hate the sw scum intensely

We were beaten fair and square yesterday, admittedly the Gervinho penalty was nailed on and some of Probert’s decisions were abysmal but we failed to put the game beyond reach with enough chances for 78 minutes with 11 players. Walcott should at least be benched for a few games as he’s had enough time to bed in but looks as though he’s gone backwards AGAIN, I’ll make allowances for Gervinho due to his recent step up to a tough league, Mertesacker too, actually I though he blocked a lot of attacks but panics with his clearances and the ball came straight back too often, but he needs a bit more time unlike Sqillacci, no need to dwell on him.

A few moves yesterday were reminiscent of 5-6 years ago with fluent passing through the midfield only for the breakdown occurring in the final third, I did think Ramsey was the culprit for dragging the tempo down too often, skilled as he is he needs to step up a gear.

Top 4 should be achievable but some harsh decisions by AW need to be made by getting rid of some deadwood never mind how popular they are/were.

Ramsey for me will be the player to miss out when Jack is back. He is too often looking for the hollywood ball at the moment and he is not shooting when he gets the chance. I think the run in the side has done him the world of good and he looks well and truly over his injury now. Just think he needs a breather.

Mertesacker did alot of good in the game yesterday. He covered well and made important clearances. He is also comfotable with the ball and was picking out the right passes. It seems that at the moment, any mistake is punished and that is why people are getting on his case. When we have our fullbacks fit, I expect him to be on the bench with TV and LK as our starting CB’s.

But overall, as is the case in the last 4/5 games, we could have scored 4/5 goals. AW needs to be brave enough to drop players if they are not doing it. Theo being the main culprit.

Agreed, TW14 was obviously the target of my rant, I like him a lot but all of our players need to become more consistent, no room for too many errors or eratic play. Also I agree on Ramsey, another that I like but again the team is more important than any one player. I’d like to see Ox given a few decent runs and as you say when Jack is fit Rambo will make way.
