Why wasn’t Van Persie sent off against Man United?

According to the laws of the game, shouldn’t Robin Van Persie have been sent off against Manchester United in Arsenal’s 2-1 loss on Sunday? I know when it comes to yellow and red cards it’s often pretty hard to keep track of all of football’s strange rules. But it’s widely believed that an automatic yellow card is to be shown to any player who lifts his team shirt to reveal a printed message on a tee-shirt below.

Well, after the Dutchman’s brilliant goal in the 71st minute he lifted his Arsenal top to reveal a message wishing his grandfather a happy 91st birthday. According to popular belief he should have received a yellow card for that infraction. However, he didn’t, but he did receive a yellow card around the 85th minute for dissent. This would have been his second yellow and technically he should have been sent off for an early shower.

Either the FA hasn’t been telling the truth all these years or the referees do have the power of using their discretion when it comes to this rule. We all remember the head-stomping Mario Balotelli getting a yellow card earlier in the season when he lifted his Man City top to reveal a message that read ‘Why Always Me’ after scoring against United at Old Trafford.

Referee Mark Clattenburg showed the Italian striker a yellow card even though he just lifted his shirt and didn’t take it off and it was believed he did so because it was mandatory. It didn’t matter what the message said, be it political or personal, he was to receive a yellow card and all players in the league know about the rule. But that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore.

About a week after Balotelli’s card, Billy Sharp, the captain of Doncaster Rovers, scored a goal and revealed a shirt that had a message in honour of his two-day-old son, Luey Jacob Sharp, who tragically died just a few days earlier. However, in this case referee Darren Deadman didn’t produce a yellow card and show it to the grieving Sharp. But was this the referee’s decision and if so, according to the rules wasn’t he wrong not to caution Sharp?

It appears Deadman was just going what he felt was morally right considering the circumstances and most fans felt he was spot on. But in a strikingly similar instance, I believe Tamir Cohen, who played for Bolton last season, received a yellow card after revealing a tee-shirt in honour of his famous father Avi Cohen, who had died just several days prior to Bolton’s match against Arsenal. Cohen happened to score a goal and the referee immediately booked him.

Football fans and players have always been led to believe these types of actions are supposed to be punished automatically by yellow cards and on most occasions they are. But, how is it that some aren’t? Is there something the FA or FIFA isn’t telling us? It seems to be just one more in a long line of rules that isn’t being called consistently.

This isn’t about whether or not you agree with the rule. It’s just something that piqued my interest during the game on Sunday and something I don’t have an answer for. Perhaps there’s somebody out there who knows the official wording to this rule and can shed some light on it?

On a side note, I saw some websites were already selling tee-shirts that read ‘Happy 91st Opa Wim,’ which is what Van Persie had written on his chest. They’re 17 American dollars and are available in several different sizes and colours. However, for some reason I didn’t see one in yellow, or red for that matter.

From Peterborough, just about 60 minutes from Arsenal's ground. I remember going to Highbury when growing up and after my Uncle's stepson Mark Heeley joined the Gunners from Peterborough when he was just 17 back in the 1970s. Currently cover sports (mainly football, boxing, and ice hockey) for various sites and magazines. Still see most of the games when in Canada. In fact, they get more EPL matches there than in Britain.

Didn’t take the shirt off, so why should he get a yellow card??????

The rule applies for removing the shirt not for lifting it

Just like some ref’s award a penalty for a ball to hand decision and other Ref’s will not, the same applies with player shirts. It depends on the referee….

The rule is in place to ensure that officials can identify players at all times throughout a game.

I dont believe the rules get into partially lifting your shirt, or putting the front part of your shirt over your head. The rules do however talk about players that remove their shirts during a game attracting a caution (yellow).

So when players lift their shirt up, for what ever reason, and to whatever extent, the referee has the freedom to interpret what they like. What is certain though is if the player removes their shirt completely, a yellow card must be issued!

I really don’t understand the point of this article? Were you desperate to see our captain go off? You’re nitpicking as if you were a United fan. Refs ignore many players who raise their t shirts to reveal a message to someone who’s expired, or a personal birthday message or something of the sort. It’s no different from the freedom referees have to interpret a hundred other types of incidents on the pitch. Move on, and don’t waste your and our time with such crap.

Fear Not my Gooner Friends I have the answer to your worries it is right in your face but you may not have noticed it so here it is.,.

Arsene is clearly in control of the spending by his admission he signs who he wants and the money is there, now he claims to have made 50,000 substitutions, in 30 years, now as much as it pains me Arsenal have had long succesful seasons in the main so let’s say Arsene has managed 70 games a season, now thats 70 x 3 substituions per game, = 210 substitutions a season, multiply that by 30 years and we get 6,300 substitutions in 30 years, nowhere near his 50,000 so perhaps Arsene is doing the accounts, quick get him to Southwark Crown Court, Harry needs him !

Some decision are more disasterous than corrective measures intended. Such a decision would have prompted serious attempts to give one team advantage!!! Bravo to the REf his decision not to cardf Van persie was pure logical.

I don’t think it was an over-enthusiastic celebration and if he’d got booked for it then he probably wouldn’t have made the challenge towards the end of the game which earned him a yellow card. If he was celebrating in front of the United fans and aggravating them then fair enough – it would deserve a yellow – but he wasn’t!

Got some really good info here from a player I know of the team involved, a certain manager well known in the game and now out of work has been paying his players the basic wage for being on the bench but an extra 2.5k for getting on the pitch, he frequently would swap left back for left back and make random substitutions, by agreeing with the player that he would put them on for £500 ..the players reported him and he lost his job !

I will not confirm who it is or make any reference to his identity or the club concerned but it is another example of managers being on the fiddle..

Harry will go away in my opinion but they are all at it !

Another stupid EFA ruling that has absolutely no bearing on the game ,but when a serious foul is committed ,like a broken leg or ankle due to a typical
reckless challenge ,the cosequences are nowhere near as dire as they  sh
ould be,only the Premier League and it,s incompetent refs. can come up

you’re argument gets thrown out the window because RVP shouldn’t have gotten that yellow card for “dissent” anyways. as the captain he can go and talk to the referee. he went to talk to him for united wasting time. he was shown a yellow…and the first words out of RVP’s mouth were “but i’m the captain..” so he may have missed a yellow card for celebrating..but he shouldn’t have gotten one for representing the team and speaking to the ref as the captain. that’s allowed in the rules of the game. it’s not called “dissent” as you have argued.
