Arsenal could face an unexpected blow in their academy this summer as a direct knock-on effect of Ethan Nwaneri’s failed loan at Marseille.

Concerns are emerging that Ethan’s brother, Emerson Nwaneri, may not sign his scholarship and could leave the club for free.

The news comes from reliable Arsenal youth source Scouting Indoors via X, who reports that doubts have been raised from the Nwaneri family regarding the future pathway for the 15-year-old.

It is being described as a salvageable situation, but the fact that it needs salvaging at all will concern those at Hale End.

Of course, Ethan Nwaneri has endured a difficult loan spell at Marseille this season, playing just 412 of a possible 1,620 minutes.

Despite scoring on his debut, his situation took a hit after then-manager Roberto De Zerbi, who was seen as the ideal coach to develop the teenager, was dismissed just two weeks after his arrival.

Subsequent manager Habib Beye cited a “persistent impression of nonchalance” for his lack of involvement, and Ethan will return to Arsenal this summer facing an uncertain future.

Now it seems that his family have been watching and drawing their own conclusions about what that means for Emerson.

The failed spell has at least brought a financial silver lining, with Arsenal set to receive additional compensation from Marseille due to the lack of playing time.

Losing Emerson Nwaneri would be a significant blow for Arsenal

Emerson is a highly promising attacking midfielder who, like his brother, can also play wide.

He has scored two goals in 12 appearances for the Under-18s this season while also featuring for the Under-21s in Premier League 2.

He is the youngest player ever to start for Arsenal’s under-21s at 15 years and 152 days, breaking the record previously set by Ethan himself.

He has even trained with the first team on occasions, suggesting just how highly he is regarded internally.

To lose a player of that profile for nothing, before he has even turned professional, would be quite a painful outcome. And perhaps an avoidable one.

It would also land at an otherwise encouraging moment for the Arsenal academy.

Highly-rated defender Maxim Afonin looks set to join Victor Ozhianvuna at Arsenal from Shamrock Rovers, with the Gunners’ Irish scouting pipeline in rude health.

Losing Emerson Nwaneri for free, however, would be a sizeable setback, and one Arsenal will be doing everything they can to prevent.
