Arsenal’s academy continues to produce some of the most exciting young players in world football.

Bukayo Saka has become the face of the club, Myles Lewis-Skelly played a huge role in a Premier League-winning campaign, and Max Dowman looks destined for stardom.

Those success stories are why so many young players dream of making it at Hale End.

Unfortunately, not every talented academy graduate gets the fairytale ending, and Josh Nichols is the latest youngster to discover that reality after announcing his Arsenal departure.

Josh Nichols’ Arsenal exit comes just nine months after Mikel Arteta praised him

Nichols has been part of Arsenal’s journey for a very long time.

The defender joined the club at the age of nine and worked his way through every level of the academy system.

Like many young players at Hale End, his dream was to one day pull on the famous red and white shirt for the first team, and he managed to achieve that goal too.

Nichols made one senior appearance for Arsenal and looked like a player who had a genuine chance of building a career under Mikel Arteta.

At the start of last season, the Arsenal manager even spoke very highly of the youngster. Arteta even described the campaign as an important one for Nichols as he looked to continue his development.

Speaking in August 2025, the Arsenal boss said, as per Arseblog: “Josh, when he has been with us, and had to compete, he’s done really, really well.

“I think naturally, when you look at his physicality, and then the capacity he has to win the ball back and not get passed, especially when he’s isolated one versus one, he’s very impressive.

“He needs to stay fit as well this season. It’s a very important season for him, I think. And let’s see how he does.”

Less than 12 months later, Nichols is leaving Arsenal at the end of his contract and is expected to join Croatian side NK Kustosija.

Arsenal need to get a grip on academy player sales

Nichols’ departure is disappointing, but the bigger issue is becoming a familiar one at Arsenal. Far too many talented academy players are leaving the club for little money or no money at all.

The loan pathway has rarely worked as effectively as it should, and Arsenal almost never seem to generate the kind of fees other elite clubs manage to secure for their young prospects.

That is money that could be reinvested into the academy, the first team or future recruitment.

With Per Mertesacker leaving his role this summer, Arsenal have an opportunity to rethink how they manage academy exits and player development pathways.

Hopefully, whoever replaces him can find a solution because improving academy sales could take Arsenal to another level, both on and off the pitch.
