A forgotten Arsenal academy graduate has a unique World Cup connection.

Only one active player heading to the tournament has represented two of those three host nations at senior level — Mexico’s Brian Gutierrez, who formerly played for the USA.

A second player was set to share that unique claim. And he came through Arsenal’s academy.

Marcelo Flores is probably not a name that will immediately register with Gunners fans. But his story is a fascinating one with regards to this summer’s tournament.

The 22-year-old joined Arsenal’s academy in 2019 from Ipswich Town, having been discovered on the Cayman Islands where his father, former Mexican professional Ruben Flores, was managing the women’s national team.

🏆 Which Arsenal star will go the furthest at this summer’s World Cup?

He signed his first professional contract at the Emirates in October 2020 and was included in The Guardian’s Next Generation 2020, highlighting the best young players in the world.

He even made the bench for a Premier League match against Crystal Palace in April 2022, though he never made a senior appearance for the club.

Former Arsenal player Marcelo Flores has a unique World Cup connection

Born in Georgetown, Ontario to a Canadian mother and Mexican father, Flores was eligible to represent Canada, Mexico or England.

England called him up at under-16 level. He flirted with Canada. But ultimately, he committed to Mexico.

He earned three senior caps before exercising a FIFA one-time switch to Canada earlier this year, having met the criteria of earning those caps before the age of 21.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch had been working to recruit him since late 2025, and Flores had injected real life into their attack during the March international window.

“It was my dream to play for the Mexican national team because that’s the only thing I had been through… until Jesse told me to open my eyes,” he told The Athletic.

Marcelo Flores will miss the World Cup due to injury

Last month, Flores was named in Canada’s 26-man World Cup squad, which would have made him the only active player at the tournament to have represented two of the three host nations.

The following day, playing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup final for Tigres, he ruptured his ACL. Cruelly, his World Cup dream was over before it had begun.

He left Arsenal in 2023 to join Tigres, where he has continued to develop promisingly, scoring a memorable hat-trick in 10 minutes against Necaxa in 2024.

Still only 22, Flores has time on his side. The next World Cup will come around, and with it, hopefully, his chance to shine on the biggest stage.
