According to Football London, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been really impressed by Cedric Soares in pre-season training.

The Portugal international initially joined us on loan from Southampton in January last year. That deal was made permanent last summer, but Cedric hasn’t quite been able to nail down a regular starting spot.

Hector Bellerin has almost always been ahead of him, while Calum Chambers was preferred over him as well at the end of last season. Not much was expected of Cedric ahead of the new campaign, but if the report is to be believed, he could become a really important player for us.

Cedric Soares has really impressed Arsenal coaches

Cedric, labelled as ‘fantastic’ by Gilberto Silva, is hugely experienced and he has impressed Arsenal fans before. However, not many of us would’ve expected him to be in contention to start our first game of next season away at Brentford.

However, the way the 29-year-old has performed in pre-season training may just reward him. The report claims that Arteta and his coaching staff are extremely impressed with Cedric and he could well start on the opening day next month.

The Insider’s View:

Arteta currently has Bellerin, Chambers and Ainsley Maitland-Niles available at his disposal. All three of them were ahead of Cedric at one point or another last season, but things are likely to be very different next term.

Bellerin has been heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates, as is Maitland-Niles. That leaves Arsenal with just Chambers and Cedric, and although the Portugal international is the more natural choice at right-back, we still believe that the 26-year-old is the better option.

Chambers is not only good with the ball at his feet, but he also offers our defence some height in aerial duels. That could prove to be extremely important for us next term, especially considering how poor we’ve been in set-piece situations so far in pre-season.

However, if Cedric really outshines the Englishman in the next three weeks, he could become Arteta’s first-choice option at right-back next season.
