'Break the bank': Merson tells Arsenal to spend big on 'perfect' PL star

In his column for The Daily Star, Paul Merson has urged Arsenal to make a move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal tried long and hard to sign a new striker in January. Edu and Mikel Arteta did everything they could to convince Dusan Vlahovic, but the Serbian ended up picking Juventus instead.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departure combined with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie NKetiah’s contracts coming to an end makes a new striker an absolute necessity for Arsenal in the summer. Merson feels Calvert-Lewin would be perfect for us.

Paul Merson: Arsenal should break the bank for Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The former Gunner wrote: “Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a perfect fit for Arsenal and they should break the bank to sign him next summer.

Arsenal need a world-class centre forward. They’ve just saved £25m in wages getting rid of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. And they tried to spend big on Dusan Vlahovic so we know the money is there.

“They should be talking to Everton about Calvert-Lewin already. Calvert-Lewin is young and hungry. He will be England’s first-choice number nine in years to come. He holds the ball up very well and he works his socks off up front.

“I’ve seen some centre forwards in my time and he works as hard as any of them. Plus he’s good in the air and he scores goals. I’d be doing that deal now!”

The Insider’s View:

Merson is spot on!

Since Mikel Arteta’s arrival, Arsenal have had Gabriel Martinelli and Aubameyang who are good at running in behind, Lacazette who is brilliant with his link-up play and Nketiah who is a poacher in the box.

The one thing we’ve lacked is someone who is a massive aerial threat. Calvert-Lewin can be that player for us if Edu and Arteta can get him in the summer transfer window.

However, he will surely cost a fortune and Everton will not make it easy for us to sign him.
