Report: Sergio Ramos rejected an eye-watering eight-figure contract offer from Arsenal

A shock report from Goal revealed last week that Arsenal were interested in signing Sergio Ramos on a free transfer.

The Spaniard is an absolute legend of the game. He is one of the greatest defenders of our generation and he has won everything there is to win for club and country over the last 15 years.

Real Madrid announced last month that Ramos would leave the Bernabeu as a free agent this summer. The 35-year-old, predictably, was not short of offers, and he signed a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain yesterday.

However, if a latest report is to be believed, Arsenal tabled the most lucrative offer among all the interested clubs to sign Ramos, but the Spaniard rejected a move to the Emirates.

Arsenal offered Sergio Ramos an eye-watering £15m-a-year contract

Goal revealed the details of all the offers Ramos had on the table before he decided to join PSG. Apart from the French giants, Arsenal and Manchester City tried to bring him to the Premier League, and the two English clubs offered him a ton of money.

The report claims that Arsenal tabled a two-year contract worth £15 million per season. That would’ve made Ramos the highest-paid player at the Emirates, beating our skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s £13 million-a-year deal. (Spotrac)

Ramos’ agents were reportedly impressed by the Gunners’ offer but the Spaniard decided to turn it down. He wasn’t interested in joining a club that wasn’t in the Champions League, and frankly, who can blame him?

Ramos, labelled as ‘spectacular‘ by Tottenham star Sergio Reguilon, has signed a two-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain worth £13 million per season. He will fight for every trophy there is in France, and it is a great move for him.

The Insider’s View:

It’s still really hard to believe that Arsenal were interested in Sergio Ramos. It’s even harder to believe that we offered to make the 35-year-old our highest-paid player to feature in a position where we have plenty of options already.

Arsenal would’ve made a massive statement by signing Ramos, but it’s good for all parties that this move didn’t happen. We’ve had enough problems with ageing players on enormous wages – Mesut Ozil and Willian – and the last thing we need is another one.

Arsenal are set to sign Ben White soon and he is a brilliant player. He is almost 12 years younger than Ramos, will not be on ridiculous wages, and although he may not go on to achieve everything the Spaniard has over the years, there’s a good chance he will become a fine player for us.
