Arsenal are expected to turn their attention to Lille and Portugal star Renato Sanches if a deal to sign James Maddison becomes impossible this summer, according to The Daily Mail.
The Gunners are working really hard to bring in a new number 10. We already have Emile Smith Rowe, but the Englishman is still only 20 and he has had his fair share of injuries over the years as well.
It wouldn’t be wise to rely completely on him for the whole of the next campaign, and Mikel Arteta, as a result, has made Leicester City star Maddison his number one target in this summer’s transfer window.
However, signing Maddison will not be easy. The Englishman is one of the Foxes’ most important players and he still has three years left on his contract. He will cost an absolute fortune, with some reports claiming that Arsenal may even have to break our transfer record to sign him. (Read more)
That could prove to be a bit beyond our means this summer. Arsenal have already signed Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga, while a big-money move for Ben White is also on the verge of completion.
Spending more than all of that on Maddison alone could prove to be impossible for us. As a result, Arteta and Edu have lined up an alternative target, and that deal will be much easier to complete this summer.
Arsenal have Renato Sanches as an alternative for James Maddison
Almost every French football club is in a terrible financial position at the moment and Lille are no different. Les Dogues are open to selling Sanches this summer and Arsenal have a fantastic relationship with them.
The Gunners signed two Lille stars in Gabriel Magalhaes and Nicolas Pepe in each of the last two summer windows. It won’t be a surprise at all to see Edu make it three in three, and Sanches would be a very good signing.

However, Maddison should be the priority. He is still only 24, is Premier League proven and will guarantee regular goal contributions. He would be an amazing signing for us, but it’s good to know that Arsenal have a solid alternative lined up in Sanches.
