Arsenal defender William Saliba is the talk of the town after his incredible debut performance on the opening day of the new Premier League season, and Gooners are having a field day on Twitter after Virgil van Dijk’s error against Fulham yesterday.

The Gunners signed Saliba from Saint-Etienne three years ago, but he never even got close to playing in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta was adamant that he wasn’t ready for the last two seasons, and he was sent out on loan as a result.

Following his return to pre-season this summer, Arteta changed his mind. The Spaniard fully trusts Saliba now, and his faith was repaid with a truly magnificent performance against Crystal Palace on the opening day.

Van Dijk struggles for Liverpool after Arsenal star Saliba steals the show

Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in the world, there’s no debate on that front.

The Dutchman is one of the biggest reasons why Liverpool have been so good over the last few years, and he’ll once again play a key part in their attempts to win every trophy available.

However, van Dijk had an afternoon to forget yesterday. Aleksandar Mitrovic was a constant threat to Liverpool’s defence, and his skill on the ball forced the best defender in the world to make a mistake that he usually wouldn’t.

Van Dijk conceded a penalty and Mitrovic scored from the spot. Liverpool could only manage a draw in the end as a result.
