'Hopefully, Arsenal take him': Even some Tottenham fans want Edu to sign 'top' defender now

Spanish newspaper Sport (Monday, page 2) claimed that Barcelona star Clement Lenglet is likely to make a move to either Arsenal or Tottenham this summer.

Both North London clubs are on the market looking for a new central defender. Arsenal have to replace David Luiz at the back, while Spurs need someone to bolster their defence ahead of their first season under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

It’s not uncommon for the two fierce rivals to target the same player. It has happened on plenty of occasions in the past, most recently with Dani Ceballos, who Arsenal snatched off the hands of Tottenham back in the summer of 2019.

Barca star Lenglet is on the market this summer and it is looking very likely that he will leave. Tottenham’s interest in the 26-year-old is understandable, but do Arsenal really need another left-footed centre-half? The simple answer is no.

Mikel Arteta already has Gabriel Magalhaes and Pablo Mari available in that position. Kieran Tierney has also filled in there for club and country in the past, and if we really have to use someone there, the Scotsman is more than just a decent option.

Arsenal are about to sign Ben White from Brighton and the Englishman can play there as well. Calum Chambers and Rob Holding have also been used in that role over the years, which should completely eliminate the need for someone like Lenglet.

Some Tottenham fans want Arsenal to sign Clement Lenglet

The Barcelona man, labelled as a ‘top player‘ by France boss Didier Deschamps, is unlikely to be an option for Arsenal. If he’s destined for a move to North London this summer, it will be to Tottenham, but most Spurs fans don’t seem to fancy him at all.
