According to a report from ESPN, Arsenal star Alexandre Lacazette has requested the club to hand him the vacant number 10 shirt for next season.

The iconic shirt, once worn by club legend Dennis Bergkamp, is held in extremely high regard by Arsenal supporters. It has been vacant since Mesut Ozil left the club in January, but it should be made available this summer.

Emile Smith Rowe is the favourite for the number 10 shirt, while Martin Odegaard might also want to get his hands on that if Arsenal sign him on a permanent deal this summer.

However, Lacazette asking for Ozil’s number 10 shirt is a surprise to many.

Alexandre Lacazette wants the Arsenal number 10 shirt

The Frenchman has been happy with the number nine shirt ever since he joined us. It makes sense as well considering that he plays in that position, but his desire to change numbers now, especially as he’s nearing the end of his contract, is strange.

Arsenal could well sell Lacazette this summer. If an offer does arrive, there is a good chance we will cash in, but Football London revealed today that if a one-year deal can be agreed, Arteta may just hold on to his star striker.

The Frenchman could well use the contract negotiations to get his wish of wearing the number 10 shirt. He wore the same in his last four seasons at Lyon before he joined us and to be fair to him, he banged in 113 goals in that period.

Maybe the number 10 shirt could change Laca’s fortunes at Arsenal. He may well go on to score as many goals as he did back when he dawned that number for Lyon, but Gooners just aren’t convinced.
