Arsene Wenger is one of the greatest managers of all time.
The legendary Frenchman spent over two decades at Arsenal and managed some of the best players in the world at Highbury and the Emirates.
Almost every single one of those players will tell you that Wenger was a fantastic man-manager, but even he had to tell a few of them off at times.
Alex Iwobi once revealed that one of his former teammates used to get in a bit of trouble with Wenger at times, but he was still the teacher’s pet.
Arsene Wenger’s ‘love-hate relationship’ with Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal
Arsenal signed Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona in the summer of 2014.
The Chile international was a big arrival at the time, and he became an absolute superstar in the Premier League during his spell at the Emirates.
Sanchez scored 80 goals and provided 44 assists in 166 games under Wenger at Arsenal, and he was among the best players in Europe for a few years then.
Wenger always protected Sanchez, but Iwobi previously revealed that the Frenchman had to discipline his attacker on occasion too.
The Nigeria international, who is now at Fulham, revealed then that Wenger and Sanchez shared a ‘love-hate relationship’ – but it was more love than hate.
In a video on Soccer AM, Iwobi was asked to name the teacher’s pet at Arsenal. He replied: “It could be Alexis at times.
“Alexis is always out early and I always see him talking to the boss. He must have something going on.
“But sometimes he does things and the boss is telling him off so it’s like a love-hate relationship. But more of the time it’s love.”
The big mistake Sanchez made at Arsenal that he immediately regretted
Sanchez had the world at his feet at Arsenal, and he decided to enter the final year of his contract to give himself the best chance of landing a big payday.
It became very clear at the time that the Chilean would not extend his deal at the Emirates, so a swap deal between Arsenal and Manchester United took place – Sanchez went to Old Trafford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan became a Gunner.
That was the worst mistake of Sanchez’s career.
The attacker earned a ton of money, but he revealed later in an interview that he wanted to return to Wenger’s Arsenal after just one training session at United.
“After the first training session, I realised many things, I came home and asked my family and my manager if I could not break the contract and return to Arsenal, something did not fit me, but I had already signed,” he said in September 2020, as per Goal.
