Over the last few years, Arsenal have swooped in for big name acquisitions during the summer transfer window. Two seasons ago it was the German play maker Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid. Then last year it was the Chilean winger Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona. These were both big money signings and they marked a break in the trend for Arsene Wenger, who in the past had preferred to develop young talent rather than buy ready-made stars.
These additions to the squad also made a statement. They showed serious progression, and people began to think that soon Arsenal would have a squad worthy of challenging for the Premier League title. Many pundits even said before the season started, that Arsenal would have a very good chance this year, and the pre-season form showed that they are a team that plays together very well. However, their fairly shaky start to the season has led to doubts over them once again, and at the time of writing betfair have them at 4/1 to win the league.
Towards the end of last season, Thierry Henry stated that he believed Arsenal needed to sign a world class striker. Although Olivier Giroud is good, he just isn’t prolific and consistent enough to be a title winning front man. The other title winners of recent years have had players like Diego Costa, Sergio Aguero and Robin Van Persie, whose performances and goals have been key to their teams lifting the trophy at the end.
Because of the last couple of years where Arsenal have clinched deals on big stars, fans will be hoping that the trend continues this summer. The star that everyone seems to be hoping for is Karim Benzema. Real Madrid’s front man could be the kind of striker that Arsenal need, to go from being a good club to a great club. According to the Daily Telegraph, this is a deal that might be about to happen, with Real Madrid reportedly ready to accept an offer of 48million for the player. Not only would the Frenchman bring more potency to the Arsenal attack, he would also bring a wealth of Champions League experience. With Petr Cech already on board, this would make the team strong contenders in Europe.
With only a couple of weeks left until the window is closed, Arsenal fans will be desperately hoping that they land a world class goal threat, and not another Danny Welbeck.
