Arsenal have effectively thrown away £83m this summer, Kroenkes must act now

Arsenal have had a great summer in terms of making new signings, but when it comes to outgoings, they still cannot get things right.

The Gunners have sadly made a name for themselves as a club that fails on the player sales front, and this was evident over the summer transfer window.

Indeed, KSE have identified player sales as an area in which Arsenal must improve, given how poorly they have performed on that front in recent years.

The scale of the problem is evident when you compare the departing players’ ballpark valuations with how much they went for – and in many cases, they were free transfers.

Arsenal have effectively lost £83m this summer due to poor player valuation and retention

When looking at all the players who left Arsenal this summer, either on loan or permanently, it is evident that the Gunners have lost a fair amount.

The table below features the players who have left, the deals in place – when applicable – and their current Transfermarkt valuations, all converted from EUR to GBP.

Admittedly, some calculations couldn’t be done, for instance when it comes to players whose loan deals have options to buy but no valuation. They have been omitted.

Arsenal have effectively lost £17.3million on Tavares, £1.4million on Marquinhos, £6.7million on Lokonga, £5.2million on Jorginho, £7.8million on Tierney, £12.2million on Partey, £17.3million on Zinchenko and £15.6million on Tomiyasu.

Only the Jakub Kiwior deal, when factoring in the loan fee, the option to buy and the add-ons, comes close to his Transfermarkt valuation – a discrepancy of just £200,000.

Based on these calculations, Arsenal have effectively lost out on £83.7million, which is simply unacceptable.

How Arsenal can improve on these damning statistics

Obviously there will be thorough processes put in place at Arsenal to ensure that this kind of thing doesn’t happen to such an extent in the future.

In a nutshell, the Gunners must be mindful of not letting their players’ valuations depreciate, either through expiring contracts or not being given the chance to impress on the pitch.

Liverpool are a good case study of how to do things right. Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Jarell Quansah all fetched big money, while Ben Doak, Caoimhin Kelleher and Tyler Morton went for decent sums too.

Liverpool integrate their players into the first team, coach them well, give them ample chances to impress on the pitch, and when they cash in, they don’t do so late in their contracts.
