Arsenal are keeping an eye on AS Roma midfielder Steven Nzonzi, according to Foot Mercato.
The former Stoke City star is currently on loan in France at Stade Rennais. The Ligue 1 outfit want to keep him but Nzonzi reportedly wants out and Arsenal are among other clubs interested in his services.
This isn’t the first time Nzonzi has been linked with a move to Arsenal. The Frenchman was reportedly on top of Unai Emery’s wish list when the Spaniard took charge of the Gunners, but we signed Lucas Torreira instead. (The Athletic)
Torreira clearly has no future at the club. The Uruguayan is on loan at Atletico Madrid and Mikel Arteta’s comments yesterday hinted that he is going to continue in Madrid for the remainder of this season. (Arsenal.com)
That’s probably why Nzonzi has been linked with a switch to the Emirates. However, this move is not going to happen.
Arsenal will not sign Nzonzi
Firstly, Arsenal aren’t in desperate need for a deep-lying midfielder. We are on the market for a number 10 and getting a deal done for that position alone is proving to be a very difficult task for Edu at the moment.
In terms of defensive midfielders, we already have Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey who can also play there. That eliminates any immediate need for a player like Nzonzi despite the fact that he is brilliant at what he does.
Finally, Arsenal should have learnt from their mistakes by now. We have invested a ton of money on players on the wrong side of 30.
Nzonzi, 32, falls into the same category. Bringing him in would just be another blunder – just like Willian’s signing was in the summer.
