Arsenal came from behind to pick up a well-deserved win over Southampton last night.
The Saints put up a strong performance and knocked us out of the FA Cup on Saturday. Many expected the same again last night, but Mikel Arteta’s men comfortably dispatched the south coast side.
Goals from Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette gave us all three points. It was a brilliant team performance from the Gunners, and the stats back that.

Here are five stats that impressed us.
Pepe’s defensive masterclass
The Ivorian scored the equaliser and it was a very well taken goal. Pepe needed that after the difficult run he has been on recently, but his offensive numbers weren’t what stood out last night.
The former Lille man won five out of his seven aerial duels, recovered the ball seven times, made four tackles, three clearances and an interception. (SofaScore) Hopefully, he can build on this performance and perform at the top level until the end of the season.

Set-piece defending
Southampton’s goal last night was straight from the training ground. A brilliantly worked goal from a corner gave them the lead, and Arsenal should have done better to avoid that.
However, our defensive record from set-pieces have been brilliant this season. We have conceded just three goals all campaign which is 15% of the goals we have shipped – the lowest rate in the Premier League this term. (Opta)

Laca’s curse has now ended
One of Alexandre Lacazette’s biggest criticisms over the years has been his performances away from home. Out of his first 20 league goals for us, only five came on the road which raised questions about his quality away from the Emirates.
Those questions have been answered in style now. After going 17 months without scoring on the road in the Premier League, Lacazette has scored eight goals in his last 12 away games – a really impressive record. (Opta)

Winning a game from a losing position
The last time Arsenal came from behind to win a game before last night was in the FA Cup final against Chelsea. The last time it happened in the Premier League was against Liverpool back in July.
That would’ve certainly been a mental block in many players’ minds, but thankfully, that’s now out of the window. Arsenal looked comfortable all game despite going down, and if anything, we should’ve scored more goals.

The best young player in the Premier League
Bukayo Saka extended his tally to five goals in the league this season. That is a stunning record on its own for someone of his age, but the fact that he alone has more goals in the top-flight than all other teenagers combined makes it even more remarkable. (Squawka)
The 19-year-old is the best young player in the Premier League – there is absolutely no doubt about that. Arsenal are lucky to have him and it will be interesting to see the level he can reach in the coming years. Lionel Messi, watch out!
