Nicolas Jover: How Arteta's new set-piece coach has transformed Arsenal

Arsenal received a lot of attention in the summer for their recruitment, but the one signing nobody really noticed is Nicolas Jover.

The Frenchman replaced Andreas Georgson in the summer to become Arsenal’s chief set-piece coach. He met Mikel Arteta at Manchester City, where he helped transform Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Gunners haven’t ever been the greatest of sides in set-piece situations. Our record defensively over the years has been poor, while offensively, we’ve been worse, even when we had the likes of Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud attacking the ball in the box.

This season, however, Arsenal have impressed immensely and Jover is the biggest reason why.

How set-piece coach Nicolas Jover has transformed Arsenal

Georgson was a great coach in his own right. In his 12 months at Arsenal, the Swede made us very strong in defensive set-piece situations. However, we ranked 17th in the Premier League for set-piece goals in 2020-21, scoring just six times.

Jover replaced Georgson in the summer and his impact has been magnificent. We’re still in November and Arsenal have already scored seven times from set-pieces – six times in the Premier League.

The Gunners’ expected goals from set-pieces was just 0.19 per game last season. That has jumped up to 0.42 this term. Our xG from corners has also gone up from 0.11 per game to 0.29, which is a huge improvement. (Sky Sports)

Arsenal’s set-piece rankings in the Premier League

The Gunners were the 18th best side in the Premier League in terms of goals from set-pieces last season, we are the best in the top-flight this term.

We were the worst side in the division with respect to chances created from set-pieces in the Premier League last campaign, we’re now the 11th best in the country. Our xG from set-pieces and corners ranks us fifth and third in the Premier League respectively, a massive improvement compared to last season, when we were the 19th and 17th respectively.

Arsenal’s corner completion rate has also gone up from 23.5 per cent – worst in the division – to 38.8 per cent, the fifth-best side in the Premier League at the moment. (Sky Sports)

Jover has been a fantastic acquisition by Arsenal and if he can help the Gunners continue what we’ve been doing so far, we will cause a lot of problems to our rivals in the coming weeks and months.
