Over the years, Arsenal and Manchester United have been entangled in some thrilling feuds, sparking a rivalry that encapsulated the early years of the Premier League.

Under Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson, the two teams were gunning for titles and cup triumphs at every twist and turn – cementing themselves as the best in the country.

There were infamous flashpoints, such as Cesc Fabregas throwing a pizza at Sir Alex Ferguson and Martin Keown clashing with Ruud van Nistelrooy.

However, even before those clashes in the 1990s and early 2000s, Arsenal and Manchester United had been battling it out since he dawn of football in England.

Arsenal 39-0 Manchester United in 1920… true or false?

Social media posts have seemingly claimed that Arsenal ran out 39-0 winners over Manchester United in 1920.

It would be an amazing feat… if it were true of course.

The image circulating that shows the scoreline with the Gunners thrashing their rivals came from a similar image depicting Barcelona thrashing Real Madrid with the same scoreline – which also hasn’t happened.

The edited images of the Arsenal and Manchester United badges should be giveaways of such a result not happening.

Every so often such posts circulate once again, though it isn’t true, and is often used in discussions between fans.

In 1920, according to 11v11, there were four games between Arsenal and Manchester United, with a mixed bag of results.

The Gunners lost the first encounter 3-0 in February that year before racking up a 1-0 victory one week later and a 2-0 win in August of the same year.

The final match in 1920 was in September, which ended with honours even in a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal vs Manchester United biggest win and defeat

While a 39-goal thrashing isn’t real, there have been some big scorelines on either side of the divide between Arsenal and Man United.

The biggest win overall for the Gunners was a 6-2 hammering of their rivals in Division One – taking place in 1947.

In the modern era – since the Premier League existed in 1992 – the biggest win for Arsenal has been in 2001, which was a 4-0 League Cup victory.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, they’ve been on the end of one huge thrashing as Arsene Wenger’s side were thoroughly beaten by Sir Alex Ferguson and his Man United side.

In August 2011, the Red Devils won 8-2 in a match that most people will have memory of in an immense shock.

A Wayne Rooney hat-trick, an Ashley Young Brace and goals from Nani, Ji-Sung Park and Danny Welbeck rounded off a miserable afternoon – with Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie landing consolation goals.
