Arsenal defender Cedric Soares has dropped a hint about his fitness ahead of the game against Chelsea tomorrow night.
The Portuguese defender hasn’t played a single minute in the Premier League in over a month now. He was even overlooked when Kieran Tierney was out injured, and Mikel Arteta revealed why last week.
The Spaniard claimed that Cedric spent some time in a hospital just 24 hours before our second leg against Villarreal. The former Southampton man recovered in time to be named in the squad, but he wasn’t given any game time.
Many fans assumed that Cedric hasn’t recovered fully from whatever happened to him last week. That was probably why Arteta went with Bukayo Saka at left-back on Sunday even though the Portugal international was on the bench.
With another game coming up on Wednesday, Arteta has a decision to make. Will he stick with Calum Chambers at right-back or will he bring Hector Bellerin back into the fold despite his underwhelming display last week?
If that dilemma wasn’t hard enough, the Arsenal boss now has a fresh headache as Cedric has declared on Twitter that he is 100 per cent fit to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tomorrow night.
Should Cedric start for Arsenal against Chelsea?
We don’t really have a lot to play for in the Premier League this season. We have an extremely slim chance of making it back into the Europa League, but even that doesn’t depend solely on our results.
So, Arteta should consider giving a chance to players who haven’t played a lot over the last few months. Cedric certainly checks that box, and he really does deserve to play after how well he fared at left-back when he filled in for Tierney back in January and early February.
However, Arteta works in mysterious ways and it won’t be a surprise to see him bench Cedric once again. That would be a shame, but with Tierney now fully fit and with Chambers playing really well, we can’t really blame him, can we?
