Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli walked off the pitch in tears after turning his ankle on Saturday. The Brazilian was immediately withdrawn from the matchday squad, and fans feared the worst.
Mikel Arteta said after the game that Martinelli’s injury didn’t look good. (Football London) That didn’t fill us with any confidence. The last thing the youngster needed was another injury – just a few weeks after returning from his last one.
Arsenal released a fitness update today on the official website and thankfully, there is positive news. Martinelli has progressed well and the medical staff are expecting him to return to full training in the next few days.
That is a massive boost for us. Martinelli, since his return, has been a breath of fresh air. His energy, directness and his intent to make something happen in the final third is a joy to watch, and thankfully, we don’t have to wait a lot before we see him again.
Martinelli should not be risked on Thursday
Arsenal host Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Thursday. Arteta will be looking to extend our winning run, but he should find a way to do it without relying on Martinelli.
We rushed Thomas Partey back into action against Tottenham last month and we all know how that turned out. The Ghanaian was a huge miss in our games before Christmas and he is yet to return to the squad.
Arsenal simply cannot afford to make the same mistake again. We have important games coming up in the Premier League and in the FA Cup. The Europa League returns next month as well and we will need all the help we can possibly get.
Martinelli is an important player for us in all of those competitions. His presence on the pitch makes our attack a lot more dangerous, and Arteta should be extremely careful with him over the next few days.
