Arsenal fans were left far from impressed with the referee during the side’s clash against Ipswich Town on Friday night.

The Gunners played host at the Emirates Stadium to the Tractor Boys, hopeful of getting a chance to jump up to second in the Premier League.

Ipswich sat deep for the majority of the match, looking to stifle Arsenal and prevent them from creating many chances.

Mikel Arteta did get a breakthrough in the first half as Leandro Trossard’s work on the left created a tap-in for Kai Havertz from close range.

Despite taking the lead, Arsenal were frustrated at not being able to double the scoreline, with some big opportunities put down for the amount of possession they had.

Another frustrating point for supporters came from the referee deciding against a potential penalty call for the side.

Arsenal fans fume at referee against Ipswich

Arsenal fans were far from happy as referee Darren England decided against awarding a penalty in the second half.

Gabriel Magalhaes appeared to be brought to ground by Liam Delap in the penalty area, to plenty of appeals.

The referee waved away the claim, though supporters disagreed with the decision when it came to their reaction on social media.

One supporter bemoaned: “Foul on Gabriel right in front of the ref, then foul on Havertz. No VAR, no penalty. Lovely stuff.” Another went on to add: “Stonewall penalty on Gabriel not given.”

Another fan questioned the decision, adding: “How was that not a penalty on Gabriel Maghalaes?” with another claiming: “Alright so the defender just rugby tackles Gabriel in front of the referee and he doesn’t give a penalty ?! Since when is that allowed?”

The frustration continued with: “How is that not a penalty?” and “I mean that’s a penalty… he rugby tackles the bloke.”

It was a decision that went against the side and one that will only pile on the frustration that has been felt surrounding the officiating.

How many penalties have Arsenal won this season?

So far this season, Arsenal have managed to win four penalties across all competitions, which includes the Premier League, EFL Cup and Champions League.

Two of those have come in the league, with Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard taking and scoring both of those.

Fans certainly feel as though they should’ve had more, though the real emphasis should be on their open-play scoring ability.

Relying on set-pieces and penalties wouldn’t be the sign of a team that is capable of scoring consistently to win the title.
