Aaron Ramsdale’s return to Arsenal with Southampton ended in defeat.

The Gunners were always the favourites to win the game, but Ramsdale’s return to the Emirates set up a great storyline ahead of the clash.

The England goalkeeper was actually very good in the first half. He wasn’t tested with too many shots at goal, but he showed real presence in set-pieces.

Southampton, to many people’s surprise, did not concede from a corner against Arsenal, and Ramsdale deserves a lot of praise for what he did.

Many Arsenal fans noticed how proactive Ramsdale was in his box. They have all taken to X to claim that the former Gunners star has leaked Nicolas Jover’s tactics to his Southampton teammates.

That may well have happened, and to Ramsdale’s credit, it worked.

Arsenal fans react to Aaron Ramsdale’s performance at the Emirates

Arsenal fans were all expecting Ramsdale to struggle with set-pieces.

The Englishman did have his problems in that department when he was at the Emirates, but he dealt with most things comfortably today.

That has led to Arsenal fans saying that Ramsdale ‘knows too much’ about Jover’s tactics for him to fall for the Gunners’ traps in corners.

One Arsenal supporter tweeted: “Funny how Arsenal fans thought this would be an easy game. Ramsdale knows the entire game plan.”

Another wrote: “Ramsdale has done his homework on our corners, he’s cleared plenty of them.”

“Ramsdale spent the entire week training his boys about Arsenal’s corner kick routine,” said another.

Another Gooner tweeted: “Ramsdale might be the first goalkeeper I have seen go that far back to save the corner. He knows these routines.”

“Ramsdale definitely coached Southampton all week on our set pieces,” wrote another fan.

One thing made Ramsdale cry against Arsenal

This was always going to be an emotional game for Ramsdale.

The Englishman was only at Arsenal for three years, but he became a fan favourite. He built a terrific connection with the supporters and that was evident today.

Arsenal fans gave Ramsdale a warm welcome and that reduced him to tears – he was really emotional before kickoff.

That was a great sight, and Ramsdale should be fairly happy with his performance too despite letting in three goals. It could’ve been many more.
