Arsenal fans are loving the performance of Kai Havertz against Manchester City, and there is a sense that Viktor Gyokeres would not be quite as good.
The German international scored a shock equaliser as he pounced on a Gianluigi Donnarumma mistake, just moments after Rayan Cherki had given the hosts the lead.
Sum up that first half in three words…
Gyokeres has often been the Gunners’ first-choice striker this season; however, Mikel Arteta made the call to bench him for Havertz.
In the first 45 minutes at the Etihad Stadium, his decision paid off as the 26-year-old really impressed in the centre forward role and scored the crucial equaliser.
Arsenal fans are loving Kai Havertz’s performance vs Man City
Arsenal fans think that Arteta’s call to start Kai Havertz over Viktor Gyokeres versus Man City has so far proven to be the right call.
Gyokeres is more of a natural number nine, but where Havertz flourishes is offering more in the press and being able to bring others into the game.
The German was certainly one of the top performers at the Etihad in the first half, and his display was rewarded with a goal.
The Gunners have missed having Havertz leading the line for them, and his display in Manchester has proved exactly why.
Now, Arsenal fans have taken to social media to praise the former Chelsea man and have questioned whether they would be level with Gyokeres starting.
- “I’m a huge fan of Gyokeres, but he could never put in half the performance that Havertz does.”
- “The difference in the level of hold-up play between Havertz and Gyokeres is crazy.”
- “Havertz, you will save our season. Where would Viktor Gyokeres have been in that position?”
- “Gyokeres could never find himself in the positions Havertz finds himself in.”
- “Gyokeres has been charging at the goalkeeper all season and never got a goal out of it. Havertz did it once today and scored.”
Arsenal fans were not the only ones to hail Havertz’s start to the game, with Gary Neville also highlighting him on Sky Sports’ commentary.
He said: “All the talk at Arsenal was about playing Viktor Gyokeres as a target man, but I think Kai Havertz has won all of his headers so far; he’s been brilliant in the air.”
Arteta’s team selection, with Eberechi Eze on the left and Martin Odegaard in the number ten, delighted supporters and it was an impressive first 45 minutes.
