In what proved to be an incredibly gratifying night for Arsenal under the lights in N5, Ethan Nwaneri stole the show against Bolton Wanderers.
Nwaneri scored twice on his full Arsenal debut at the Emirates Stadium, a remarkable young talent who Mikel Arteta has been patiently waiting on for some time.
Of course, Nwaneri wasn’t the only Hale End Academy youngster making his full debut, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Josh Nichols and Jack Porter also started.
Nichols and Porter were used out of necessity, two promising youngsters in their own right.
But Lewis-Skelly is arguably in the same position as Nwaneri right now, he’s fighting for a regular spot in the first-team, he’s trying to prove that he’s ready for the Premier League.
Myles Lewis-Skelly takes his chance against Bolton in the EFL Cup
Although a lot of the chat at the Emirates was dominated by Nwaneri’s performance on the concourse, Lewis-Skelly’s name was also often mentioned too.
Speaking to fans at the ground, many felt as if Lewis-Skelly looked like one of the senior, more experienced players, navigating a relatively winnable cup tie.

Lewis-Skelly looked confident and assured on the ball – he looked like he was helping his teammates through the game in similar fashion to Jorginho.
In particular, there was one pass that Lewis-Skelly played that had the North Bank in raptures, his pass to Raheem Sterling who then assisted Nwaneri’s first goal in the 37th minute.
Fans were turning around, looking at each other, barely able to believe that a 17-year-old (now turned 18) was able to play such a pass, breaking the lines in a way that Mesut Ozil would be proud of.
Nwaneri was the star of the show, but Lewis-Skelly was also turning heads with one fan boldly claiming that he “has to start on Saturday” – even if that’s unlikely to be the case just yet.
Oleksandr Zinchenko’s upgrade has arrived
Currently out injured right now, Lewis-Skelly’s performance reminded of Oleksandr Zinchenko at his best, inverting into midfield from left-back.
It needs to be remembered that Lewis-Skelly is actually a midfielder by trade, his left-back experiment only started during the past year or so.
But right now, given that Riccardo Calafiori is also on board, it seems as if Zinchenko is almost surplus to requirements in N5, as harsh as that may sound.
And although he played well on Wednesday, the same could arguably be said for Jakub Kiwior, who Calafiori is simply a better version of.
Arsenal fans had their say on Kiwior, a defender who will be needed for squad depth until the likes of Takehiro Tomiyasu are recovered, but thereafter it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Poland international departed.
