Arsenal fans have a lot to say about Raheem Sterling after his Leicester performance

Mikel Arteta selected the only front three available to him for Arsenal’s game against Leicester City, and it didn’t exactly function well.

The Gunners have had ten days off to rest and recuperate after being dumped out of the Carabao Cup against Newcastle.

However, they didn’t look well rested against the Foxes, delivering an impotent and lackluster display for the majority of the match.

Mikel Merino saved the day, coming on as a substitute to score twice and secure all three points for Arsenal.

Raheem Sterling was the man sacrificed for the Spaniard with 22 minutes to play, and the winger’s performance has certainly sparked discourse online.

Arsenal fans weren’t happy with Raheem Sterling’s display against Leicester City

Mikel Arteta named a Premier League starting eleven that didn’t include any of Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli or Kai Havertz for the first time since 2021 for the trip to the East Midlands.

The Arsenal boss opted to deploy Leandro Trossard up front, with Ethan Nwaneri on the right and Sterling on the left.

Trossard struggled to provide the Gunners with a focal point, although he wasn’t helped by a disastrous Sterling performance next to him.

The Arsenal faithful were quick to point out Sterling’s flaws, venting their frustrations with the player on X during and after the game.

One fan wrote, damningly: “Raheem Sterling, that my friend, was the worst individual performance from an Arsenal player since the club was founded in 1886.”

Another added: “Raheem Sterling had more offsides (2) than shots (1) + key passes (0) + dribbles (0).”

Another claimed that Leicester didn’t even bother trying to mark the Englishman: “They’re literally just leaving Sterling unmarked out there and fair enough.”

One supporter, perhaps most condemningly, wrote: “Sterling career ender today.”

Meanwhile, one fan claimed that Sterling will lose his place in the team for next weekend’s game against West Ham at the Emirates, despite the lack of forward options.

They posited: “You’d think with the current state of our attack Sterling can’t lose his starting role, but credit it to him for giving it a go. At this rate I wouldn’t include him in the 18 against West Ham.”

Raheem Sterling’s statistics vs Leicester show bad he played

This wasn’t an overreaction from the Arsenal fanbase – Sterling was really that bad.

Almost everything he tried didn’t come off, as he failed to beat his man continuously and ended several dangerous attacks with poor touches or loose passes.

The statistics certainly reflect this, as he managed just one shot, no key passes and no successful take-ons.

Paul Merson claimed Sterling can rediscover his form if he’s given a run of games by Arteta, but based on this performance, he doesn’t look like he’ll be able to.

Arsenal ought to have considered cutting his loan short in January.
