Arsenal’s title chances suffered a huge blow as they were held to a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.

Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz’s goals had Arsenal fans thinking the three points were wrapped up -Unai Emery’s side however would have other ideas.

Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins would silence the Emirates crowd with two smash-grab goals.

Arsenal however would have chances to get themselves back in front, even having the ball in the back of the net in the 88th minute – only to see VAR deny them of last-minute joy.

Arsenal fans slam ‘awful’ VAR decision vs Aston Villa

The Gunners were in dreamland when Mikel Merino’s deflected shot bounced off Havertz into the Aston Villa net.

Their joy however would be short-lived, with VAR disallowing the goal due to the ball seemingly deflecting off Havertz’s hand.

Arsenal fans though claim VAR got the decision wrong, costing their side the three points.

One fan said via X (formerly Twitter): “That was an awful VAR call that just cost us 2 points. Even if hits his arm. It’s drawn in against his stomach in a normal position such garbage officiating.”

A third supporter said: “Arsenal have been cheated! Harvetz arm was right on the body, he didn’t move it, he was actually getting out of the way. If that was a Villa player, VAR would have said “The arm was in a natural position so no penalty”, that should be the same if it’s an offensive player.”

Some fans also took time to highlight how quickly VAR made the decision.

“VAR SOOOO quick to call that handball. Arsenal robbed of that goal,” another fan added.

Ollie Watkins ‘wasn’t sure’ with VAR’s Havertz decision

Arsenal have no been stranger to VAR controversy in recent weeks after Manuel Ugarte escaped a red card in their FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.

With supporters feeling like VAR has robbed yet again, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins was questioned on the decision in an interview with SkySports.

“Seeing it back there, I think it’s gone in favour of us. If that was against me, I would be disappointed. I’m not sure, but that’s what VAR is there for.”

SkySports pundit Lee Hendrie then replied to Watkins, claiming: “It was handball Ollie, trust me.”
