Bukayo Saka had to play as a midfielder when Arsenal faced Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup.

The England international was originally named on the bench by Mikel Arteta, but an injury to Riccardo Calafiori during warm-up forced a change in plans.

The Arsenal manager decided to start Saka as a right-sided number eight, which is a position he had never played before.

Despite that, the Gunners’ number seven produced a really promising first-half display against the Latics before being replaced at half-time.

Here’s what Arsenal supporters had to say about Saka’s midfield role.

Arsenal fans want Bukayo Saka’s position changed after his midfield display vs Wigan

Arsenal fans were so impressed by Bukayo Saka playing in a central role that they are desperate to see more of him.

Here’s how many of them reacted after watching him in the first half.

One supporter tweeted: “I know it’s “only Wigan” but I REALLY like Saka in this central role. Would love to see him there v Wolves too in a more competitive game.”

Another wrote: “I’ve waited 5 years to watch Saka play in the 10. He hasn’t let me down whatsoever.”

“I’ve been saying for years, Saka is an interior. It’s beautiful to watch him play with freedom and central to everything we do. Absolutely hate to see him shackled to RW,” said another.

Another Gooner posted: “This Saka 10 masterclass is beautiful. As simple as getting your best players inside and closer to goal man – look at Eberechi Eze & the movement.”

“Now that Max Dowman is back in training, Saka in midfield could be a legitimate option since we’ll have another RW option on the bench. Would be great to be able to use this setup against low/mid blocks,” wrote another.

Bukayo Saka’s stats as a midfielder during Arsenal vs Wigan are so impressive

Arsenal fans are right to want to see Saka in a more central role.

The Englishman is usually marked by three or four players when he plays out wide, which makes it so difficult for him. As a midfielder, teams cannot do that, which is why it will bring the best out of him.

Despite only playing for 45 minutes, Saka showed everything you would want from an attacking midfielder.

The Hale End star had 36 touches of the ball and completed 25 of his 26 attempted passes, maintaining a stunning 96 per cent passing accuracy. He also created a chance and had two shots at goal.

Even defensively, Saka was excellent. He won six of his seven attempted duels, made five ball recoveries and wasn’t dribbled past a single time. [Sofascore]

Those numbers are really impressive, and we can’t wait to see Saka get a chance in this role again.
