Thierry Henry would have approved of Eberechi Eze’s volley against Bayer Leverkusen, as he scored a similar strike himself many years ago.

Eze has realised many of his dreams this season, adding another as he scored his first-ever Champions League goal.

Arsenal were knocking on Bayer Leverkusen’s door for some time, and it became clear that it would take something special to beat goalkeeper Janis Blaswich.

Something special is exactly what Eze served up, as his two touches in the 36th minute gave Arsenal the lead in the round of 16 second leg, finding the net with a remarkable volley.

Agree or disagree: Eberechi Eze just scored Arsenal’s goal of the season

It was a touch of class that might have had some Arsenal fans rewinding back to the year 2000, reminiscing on Thierry Henry’s volley against Manchester United.

It’s not happened for a long while, but Arsenal fans have seen a player take the ball on the turn and fire a volley into the net before.

In October 2000, Arsenal beat Manchester United 1-0 at Highbury, claiming all three points thanks to a wonder-strike from Henry.

The Frenchman received the ball on the edge of the box, flicked it up with his first touch and volleyed it home with his second.

Eze 🤝 Henry

It was a moment of excellence from the Arsenal legend, one that Eze closely imitated against Bayer Leverkusen.

Just like Henry, Eze’s goal came when he received a pass with his back to goal, teed it up with his first touch and scored on the volley with his second.

Some have suggested that Arsenal have no superstars in attack, but Eze proved that wrong, channelling his inner Henry to light up the Emirates on a must-win Champions League night.

Ally McCoist reacts to ‘ridiculous’ Eberechi Eze goal

It wasn’t just the Arsenal fans at the Emirates that erupted when Eze scored, as on TNT Sports’ commentary duty, Ally McCoist was left spellbound.

“That’s just absolutely ridiculous, the power on that. He can strike a football, I’m stating the obvious,” McCoist said, reacting to Eze’s volley.

The pundit continued to admit that the Arsenal midfielder produced something he hadn’t seen for a long time.

“That is just an incredible strike of the football. I haven’t seen a ball hit as hard as that in a long time! Absolutely wonderful strike, what a goal! The goalkeeper has no chance.”

It was a career-high for Eze, as he scored his first Champions League goal in style, which was his ninth of the season for Arsenal.
