Arsenal faced Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday evening in one of the biggest games of their season.
The Gunners drew 1-1 with the La Liga outfit in a cagey game, and they now take the tie back to north London next week as they look to get to the Champions League final for just the second time in their history.
Arsenal will fancy their chances at home after beating Atletico 4-0 earlier this season, but this first leg wasn’t a standout performance it has to be said.
With that in mind, we’ve named our winners and losers from this match.
Who was your Man of the Match from Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal
Winners
Piero Hincapie
Making this left-back spot his own, incredibly aggressive against one of the toughest teams in Europe, made his presence felt down his flank. Growing as a player and as a presence in this Arsenal team.
Hincapie has a case to make to be Arsenal’s best signing of the season after recent showings.
David Raya
Excellent again this evening, brilliant save from Julian Alvarez in the 13th minute, while he topped that in the second-half with a pair of great saves from Ademola Lookman.
Raya continues to impress on the biggest of stages.
Viktor Gyokeres
Viktor Gyokeres put in a solid performance here, scoring the opening goal, in fact, at one point on commentary it was noted that Gyokeres looked back to his Sporting Lisbon best.
Arguably outperformed Julian Alvarez amid links to Arsenal, and that may well bode well for Gyokeres’ long-term future at the Emirates.
Declan Rice
Faultless again. Proving himself to be the man for the big occasion once again, pushed the team forward, battled well and made sure the team was ticking at the right tempo. Perfect performance away from home.
Losers
Tottenham Hotspur
Somehow, Tottenham Hotspur have come out of this game as one of the losers.
Atletico Madrid’s Johnny Cardoso certainly caught the eyes in the midfield tonight, and, not too long ago, Spurs had an option to buy Cardoso, which they didn’t take up.
Spurs are facing relegation while Cardoso is starring in the Champions League, they may well be regretting their decisions again after this evening.
Ben White
Was unlucky in giving the penalty away with his handball, but, overall, another poor performance from White.
The case to sell White this summer is growing on a weekly basis. This could be his last ever Champions League appearance for Arsenal if Jurrien Timber is back in time for the second leg.
Gabriel Martinelli
Ineffective and poor in this game. For a player who should be full of energy and flair, that was entirely lacking in this game.
The Champions League has been Martinelli’s competition this year, but not tonight.
