Legendary commentator Guy Mowbray almost did something rule-breaking during Arsenal’s clash with Real Madrid.
Mowbray was one of 60,000 at the Emirates Stadium to be left stunned by Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Real Madrid.
The Gunners shook Madrid to the core with three second-half goals, two of which came from Declan Rice.
Extraordinarily, Rice scored two direct free kicks only 12 minutes apart, sending the Emirates into pandemonium and almost landing Mowbray in hot water.

The rule that Declan Rice almost made Guy Mowbray break
Jack Wilshere branded Rice a bargain after the Englishman’s double to sink the Galacticos in the first leg.
Wilshere was one of many to be mesmerised by the midfielder, with commentary icon Mowbray taking to X to admit that he was ‘tested’ by Rice’s brilliance.
Mowbray revealed that many who follow his work often ask how difficult it is not to swear live on commentary, prompting the reporter to answer such question in relation to the showdown at the Emirates.
“I often get asked how we don’t swear during commentaries. Those two Declan Rice free kicks tested me tonight. F…….nomenal.”
Rice’s two free-kick goals left Mowbray in a state that almost saw him break the rule of not using profanity to describe the brilliance of the occasion.
Mowbray has commentated on some of the biggest games in football, overseeing some of the best players in history, with Rice certainly going down in the commentator’s memory books on a night at the Emirates to treasure.
Rice left ‘speechless’ over Real Madrid brace
Though Mowbray had to think about the words he said after Rice’s second free-kick goal, the midfielder himself admitted he was left ‘speechless’.
Speaking to Amazon Prime Video after the win, Rice shared his doubts over whether the magnitude of his achievement will ever sink in.
“I don’t know whether it will ever sink in, I’ve gone back to my phone then and it’s gone crazy,” he said.
“To score my first free-kick in a game is a special one. And then when I got the second one… I just had the confidence. I’m speechless really.”
Having never scored a direct free kick in his career, Rice wouldn’t have even dreamt of the idea of netting two in a knockout game against Real Madrid on a night of pure elation in N5.
