Arsenal took on Manchester United in a huge clash in the FA Cup third round, with both teams going into it in the hope of earning passage to the next round.

It was a difficult opening half for the Gunners as they thought Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring, but it was disallowed for offside.

With the match level, the second half provided a bit of a different challenge for Arsenal to unlock Manchester United.

It got even tougher for Mikel Arteta when a break from the Red Devils allowed Bruno Fernandes to emphatically smash home an opener for the away side.

The match turned on its head when Diogo Dalot was handed a second yellow card, reducing Manchester United to ten.

Arsenal drew level moments later as Gabriel Magalhaes let go with a vicious volley from the resulting free-kick.

There was then a chance to take the lead in the game as Kai Havertz won a penalty, only for Martin Odegaard to miss it.

That meant it went to extra time, where both teams had golden opportunities to take the lead but turned them down to go to penalties.

Manchester United went through to the next round, with Havertz missing the deciding penalty.

Arsenal player ratings vs Manchester United

David Raya – 6.5

There was very little for David Raya to do in the match compared to his counterpart, with the goalkeeper unable to do very much about the one goal for Manchester United.

The Spaniard did, however, have to make one huge save to deny Joshua Zirkzee in extra time to keep the game level.

Myles Lewis-Skelly – 6

Myles Lewis-Skelly was given a chance at left-back for the match and had a solid performance without impacting too much in the forward departments.

William Saliba – 6

Defender William Saliba was called into action very few times in the match, with the centre-back unable to do much to prevent the opening goal.

Gabriel Magalhaes – 6.5

Gabriel Magalhaes was at fault for Manchester United’s opener when he cleared a header poorly, allowing the Red Devils to break through Alejandro Garnacho and lead through Bruno Fernandes.

The Brazilian didn’t show his usual ability from set-pieces with his headers, but he did manage to drag his side level with a volley from a free-kick.

Jurrien Timber – 6

Jurrien Timber combined well on the right to help create some big opportunities for the side, though he wasn’t cutting through the opposition.

Jorginho – 6

Arsenal are used to what they can expect from Jorginho, with the midfielder often receiving the ball from deep to bring it forward.

Mikel Merino – 5

It was a largely fine performance from Mikel Merino, though the midfielder wasn’t able to create any clear-cut opportunities.

Martin Odegaard – 3

It wasn’t really Martin Odegaard’s day as the star showed flashes of bright spells but otherwise struggled to impact the game.

Injury proved to be a slight concern for the Norway international, who went to ground at the end of the first half with an issue that could’ve impacted his play.

His afternoon was made worse when he went on to miss a penalty for Arsenal, missing a chance to take the lead.

Gabriel Jesus – 5.5

It was a fine performance for Gabriel Jesus in his short display, but the winger was hit with a big injury and had to be substituted early in the match.

Gabriel Martinelli – 7

While he didn’t show his clinical best in front of goal, Gabriel Martinelli was the most pertinent threat for Arsenal.

At times the Brazilian was playing off the left flank but he continually switched to feature down the middle too.

Martinelli ended up getting Diogo Dalot sent off, which proved to be a turning point in the match for the Gunners.

Kai Havertz – 1

A terrible display from Kai Havertz, who wasn’t particularly able to influence the game in which Arsenal would’ve wanted.

The German forward missed two big chances in the box when he smashed both opportunities wide right in front of goal.

Havertz did win a penalty late on, though it would go on to be missed, he may have been fortunate to win it at all.

To make it even worse, he went on to miss a key penalty in the shootout to put his side on the backfoot.

Substitutes –

Raheem Sterling – 8

Raheem Sterling made a huge impact on the right flank, causing plenty of problems for Manchester United after coming on.

The winger was able to beat players both inside and outside, creating a whole host of big chances for the team.

Declan Rice – 6

Declan Rice was fine from the substitute bench, but perhaps should’ve scored as he missed a point-blank header to take the lead.

Leandro Trossard – 6

Mikel Arteta called upon Leandro Trossard in extra time when he came on to help Arsenal try and win the match, but missed a golden opportunity to score.

Thomas Partey – 5

Brought on in the first half of extra time, Thomas Partey was brought on to feature at right-back for the side.

He did little to impact the game in that time.

Kieran Tierney – N/A

Kieran Tierney made a late appearance in extra time when he came on for the injury Jorginho.
