Jamie Carragher claims that Kai Havertz was ‘very lucky’ not to have been sent off during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Burnley.

Havertz turned in Bukayo Saka’s corner as Arsenal took another major step towards ending their 22-year wait for a Premier League title.

Who was your Man of the Match against Burnley?

Mikel Arteta’s team now lead the Premier League table by five points and could have the title wrapped up if Man City drop points at Bournemouth.

But it was Havertz who nearly cost the Gunners dearly following his shocking challenge on  Lesley Ugochukwu in the 67th minute at the Emirates Stadium.

Jamie Carragher cannot believe Kai Havertz was not sent off

Jamie Carragher cannot understand how Kai Havertz managed to avoid a red card during Arsenal versus Burnley.

The former Premier League defender says the German attacker was ‘very lucky’ given the referee had a great view of the incident.

Then, VAR opted against getting involved and stuck with Paul Tierney’s decision to book the former Chelsea star.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “He’s very lucky. The fact that the referee has got such a good view and gives a yellow card means it maybe difficult for VAR to go against it.

“How the referee hasn’t given a red card straight away, I don’t know. He can’t have a better view. It has to be a red card.

“I struggle to see how you get away with that with how high up the calf it is.”

After the game, Arsenal Insider was exclusively told by Mark Clattenburg that Havertz was lucky not to have been sent off.

The ex-Premier League official was in agreement with Carragher that Havertz’s challenge had a ‘degree of force and malice’, deserving a red card.

Arsenal can count themselves lucky on this occasion, as they remain the only Premier League team this season not to receive a red card.
