On his return to face Chelsea, Kai Havertz briefly thought he had put Arsenal 1-0 up in west London, choosing to send a clear message to the home fans when celebrating.

Unfortunately, Havertz was then swiftly made aware that his Arsenal strike was marginally offside, even if it was an excellent piece of quick-thinking by the away side.

Havertz then had to retract his celebration hushing the Chelsea fans, who he’s already come back to haunt in the past.

Of course, the German then didn’t have another opportunity to score before the full-time whistle.

Although, there was one crucial nearly moment just before Michael Oliver called a halt to the game, a chance that was ultimately squandered by Leandro Trossard.

Leandro Trossard stopped Kai Havertz from scoring a dramatic late winner

After some tremendous work down Arsenal’s left hand side, William Saliba of all people was in place to drill a delightful ball across the Chelsea box.

Robert Sanchez was never favourite to get to the ball and Arsenal had Trossard, Havertz and then even Gabriel Jesus ready to tap the ball home.

However, it transpired that Trossard wasn’t quite in position to direct the ball into the back of the net, and he actually stopped his Arsenal teammates doing so with ease behind him.

Understandably, Havertz was absolutely incensed – the striker struck the ground with his fists, he was fuming with Trossard.

Watching on, it’s hard to blame the Belgian for making a play for the ball, but perhaps Havertz had given him a sufficient shout behind – who was ready to win the game in dramatic fashion.

A huge nearly moment for Arsenal, who would have been celebrating in style right by the away end.

Why was Kai Havertz’s goal disallowed against Chelsea?

Taking a second look at Havertz’s goal that never was against Chelsea, the Premier League explained VAR’s decision over on X.

The Arsenal attacker was ultimately stood in an offside position, something that quickly became clear when checking replays.

VAR said: “Havertz’s goal was initially awarded on-field. VAR checked and confirmed that Havertz was in an offside position and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”

A fairly straightforward decision, even if it was a frustrating one from Arsenal’s perspective.

Gary Neville was stunned by Gabriel Martinelli’s performance against Chelsea, but it was a nearly night for Havertz and Trossard, who couldn’t quite get the ball over the line.
