Thomas Frank tweaked his team’s tactics for the North London Derby, but Arsenal exposed them anyway.
Arsenal beat Tottenham 4-1 in the North London Derby to earn bragging rights and, more importantly, a six-point lead over the rest of the Premier League.
It was a nightmare occasion for Frank, who, after mocking Eberechi Eze in his pre-match press conference, was left red-faced by the Arsenal star, who netted a hat-trick.
Perspectives show that Eze was the least of Tottenham’s worries, as Arsenal’s rivals rocked up to the Emirates with little intent, all stemming from their tactical set-up.

Leandro Trossard made Thomas Frank’s North London Derby game plan look silly
From the early moments of the derby, it became clear that Spurs planned to limit Arsenal and charge forward when possible.
The issue was that the moment never came, so Tottenham merely sat back, allowing wave after wave of pressure, which worked in Arsenal’s favour.
It wasn’t supposed to be that way, as playing with a back five was implemented to absorb Arsenal’s danger, but Frank made the mistake of forgetting that the Gunners were already well-rehearsed.
Speaking to Stadium Astro after the win, Leandro Trossard was asked about whether Arsenal were surprised by Tottenham’s negative approach.
“Maybe a bit,” the Belgian said, before admitting that the Arsenal squad are familiar with teams overcompensating in defence in the hope of getting a result.
“It’s no surprise, but we have been facing a back five a lot of times this season, so we’re kind of used to it.”
What Frank hoped would prevail as a tactical masterclass was a disaster, as Arsenal had the answers to their rivals’ approach before Michael Oliver blew the first whistle.
Thomas Frank on Tottenham’s biggest problem against Arsenal.
One moment proved Tottenham couldn’t stop Arsenal, no matter what they tried
Frank is an admirer of Arsenal, or at least he was, as the Gunners really humiliated his Tottenham side on matchday 12.
If the 90 minutes weren’t enough to show Arsenal’s dominance over Spurs, then one snippet of the game summarised it perfectly.
Leandro Trossard’s goal against Tottenham
In the 35th minute, Tottenham had ten players behind the ball in a bid to keep Arsenal out, but a lofted pass from Mikel Merino undid everything in a split second.
Trossard got onto the end of Merino’s pass beyond the last line of defence, finishing to give the Gunners the lead.
Arsenal didn’t look back after that, as even Spurs’ best efforts to limit the hosts man for man failed.
