Arsenal lost 2-1 to Manchester City on Sunday, and there are a number of places where you could place the blame for this defeat.
Gabriel Magalhaes had his worst game of the season, Eberechi Eze made a crucial mistake, while injuries were also a factor.
However, speaking to Sky Sports, Martin Odegaard gave his verdict on Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat, and he focused on one key issue – they were not sharp enough in front of goal.
Arsenal delivered a performance that, in many ways, matched the occasion. They pressed well, competed physically, and created chances, especially in the second half. For long spells, they looked capable of getting a result at the Etihad.
Simple question: How do Arsenal win the Premier League title from here?
Martin Odegaard’s verdict on why Arsenal lost to Man City
So many times this season, Arsenal have been praised for their defensive acumen, but that ability to score goals has been lacking.
Arsenal’s only goal on Sunday came from a goalkeeping error, and while they created other chances, they didn’t capitalise.
“I’m disappointed not to win. Obviously, we wanted to come here and get a result. And I thought we were really up for it today. We played a good game. I thought we pressed them really well. We had some really good moments there on the high press. And then, especially the second half, we looked a lot more dangerous,” Odegaard said.
That assessment reflects a team that got a lot right.
Arsenal were aggressive without the ball and showed intent when they won it back. They forced City into uncomfortable moments and created openings that could have changed the game. Against a side like City, that is not easy to do.
The difference came in the final moments of those moves.
“You know, we had a few big, big moments there in front of the goal. So, yeah, small margins, you know, to decide a game like this. And we weren’t sharp enough in front of the goal. And, yeah, that’s why we go home with nothing. So, disappointing,” Odegaard added.
Odegaard is spot on, this was a disappointing result, and, as simple as it sounds, you’re not going to win big matches if you don’t put the ball in the net often enough.
This is an issue Arsenal need to address if they want to win big trophies.
