Arsenal set a new record in the Champions League following their win against Atletico Madrid.
The Gunners were excellent at the Emirates on Tuesday night. A goal each from Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli, followed by a brace by Viktor Gyokeres, sealed a stunning 4-0 win.
Atleti are usually a very difficult team to play against, and it wasn’t an easy game by any means. But Arsenal blew them away in a 13-minute spell in the second half.
By doing so, the North Londoners have extended their dominant run against La Liga opposition.
Arsenal make Champions League history after 4-0 win vs Atletico Madrid
Spanish teams must hate playing against Arsenal at this point.
Mikel Arteta, who hails from Spain himself, knows how to beat a team from his home country, and he showed that again on Tuesday night.
Arsenal’s win over Atletico Madrid was not only impressive, but also historic.
No other team in the history of the Champions League has managed seven consecutive victories over Spanish opposition.
Arteta has become the first manager to do so, following wins over Real Madrid (twice), Sevilla (twice), Girona, Athletic Club and now Atletico Madrid.
That is a stunning achievement, especially as teams from La Liga have caused a lot of pain to the Gunners over the years.
Mikel Arteta’s home record in the Champions League group stages is unbelievable
One of Arteta’s big objectives when he joined Arsenal was to make the Emirates Stadium a fortress.
The Arsenal manager has had to work really hard over the years to fulfil that dream, and he may have finally done it – in the Champions League at least.
Since returning to Europe’s most prestigious club competition, Arteta’s Arsenal haven’t even conceded a goal at the Emirates in the group stage/league phase.
In nine games, they have scored 26 goals and have let in a grand total of zero. That is an extraordinary achievement.
