Arsenal hammered Fulham on Saturday as they ran out 3-0 winners against the Cottagers.

For the first time in a while, there’s a real air of optimism, and even excitement, around the Emirates after this game.

However, the title race is still incredibly close, and, at this pace, it looks like the league title could be decided on goal difference.

Mikel Arteta’s decision to substitute Bukayo Saka at half-time against Fulham could end up being one of those moments that looks far worse with time, especially if Arsenal’s title race comes down to fine margins.

Bukayo Saka being subbed could affect Arsenal’s goal difference.

Saka was outstanding in the first half.

He scored, assisted, and caused constant problems down the right side. Fulham could not deal with his movement or directness, and Arsenal looked in complete control with him on the pitch. It felt like a game that could turn into a true thrashing if that momentum continued.

Then he was taken off.

Whether it was precautionary, fitness-related, or part of a wider plan, the impact was immediate. Arsenal lost their sharpest attacking threat, and the game slowed. The dominance they had built in the first half faded, and crucially, they did not score again.

At this stage of the season, goal difference is not a minor detail. It could decide the title. Arsenal had the chance to add to their tally against a team that was struggling to cope, and instead, they shifted.

With Saka on the pitch, Arsenal were aggressive, direct, and constantly looking to hurt Fulham. Without him, they became more controlled but far less threatening. The cutting edge disappeared and no more goals followed.

Of course, managing Saka’s fitness is always a priority, especially with the number of games he plays and the knocks he picks up. Keeping him available for the run-in is important, but there is a balance to be struck between caution and opportunity.

This felt like a moment where Arsenal could have been more ruthless.

Of course, it may not matter at the end of the day, but if this title does come down to goal difference, this may be remembered as a crucial moment.
