Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle United.
Eberechi Eze’s stunning goal proved to be the difference on the night, but there were several strong performances across the pitch.
Martin Zubimendi was one of those who quietly impressed in midfield once again. However, his substitution in the second half raised a few eyebrows among fans and pundits.
Mikel Arteta has now revealed that his compatriot was unwell.

Mikel Arteta says Martin Zubimendi was ‘sick’ vs Newcastle
Zubimendi started the game as usual and was part of a midfield that controlled large periods of the match.
The Spaniard looked composed on the ball and did his job effectively alongside Declan Rice, who had a solid game as well.
However, in the second half, Arteta made the decision to take Zubimendi off and replace him with Myles Lewis-Skelly.
It was not an obvious tactical change, which is why it led many to question the reasoning behind it. Arteta later confirmed that the Spaniard had been struggling physically during the game.
He said, as per Arsenal.com: “Zubi was sick, and at half-time, he wasn’t feeling good. He tried his very best.
“He played a really good game, and in the end, we had to take him off.”

Zubimendi was one of Arsenal’s best players despite being unwell
Zubimendi has faced some criticism in recent weeks, but his display against Newcastle was a reminder of his quality.
In the 81 minutes he was on the pitch, the former Real Sociedad man had 66 touches and completed 41 of his 48 passes, maintaining an accuracy of 85 per cent.
The Arsenal number 36 also contributed creatively by creating one chance during the game.
Do you think Martin Zubimendi is underrated in the Arsenal fanbase?
Off the ball, he was just as effective, registering 10 defensive actions – including five tackles, two interceptions and three clearances.
On top of that, he made six ball recoveries, showing his awareness and work rate out of possession. (Sofascore)
The fact that Zubimendi produced this level of performance while feeling unwell makes it even more impressive.
Arsenal will now hope he recovers quickly and is fully fit for the crucial Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.
