Arsenal secured a 2-1 win against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
The Gunners were involved in another infuriating game. Viktor Gyokeres deservedly won a penalty, but the VAR interfered when they didn’t have to and overturned that decision.
Then, Nick Woltemade, whose push on Gabriel was deemed soft, scored the opener for Newcastle, and it just felt like one of those days at that point.
However, two glorious headers from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhaes won the game for Arsenal in dramatic fashion in the end.
Noni Madueke hails Gabriel Magalhaes after his winner for Arsenal vs Newcastle
“Death, taxes and Gabriel Magalhaes scoring a header” – those are the three things in life that are certain, said commentator Conor McNamara when the Brazilian scored Arsenal’s winner against Newcastle United.
The Gunners had to dig in deep, tolerate a terrible performance from the referee and break Newcastle’s low block in the second half.
That’s not an easy thing to do at all, but Mikel Arteta’s men showed immense character to pull it off at one of the most difficult away grounds in the country.
Merino first scored a lovely header after Declan Rice’s cross, but it was Gabriel’s goal in the 96th minute that won Arsenal the game.
Noni Madueke, who is currently nursing a knee injury at home, was watching his side on TV, and he loved what he saw.
Right after Gabriel’s late winner, Madueke posted a picture of his television screen where Gabriel can be seen celebrating.
Below that, he wrote: “Monsterrrrr!”
Gabriel is closing in on an all-time Arsenal record
Gabriel is arguably the best goalscoring defender in the Premier League right now.
The Brazil international is a humongous threat every time Arsenal have a corner, and he showed his class again at St James’ Park.
Gabriel’s goal against Newcastle is his 18th in the Premier League for the Gunners.
Laurent Koscielny is the only other Arsenal defender who has scored more goals for the club in the Premier League – 22.
We are absolutely convinced that Gabriel will break the Frenchman’s record soon.
