Arsenal suffered defeat to West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium in a terrible performance from Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal started the game sluggishly against West Ham and things didn’t get better for the Gunners, who left home supporters incredibly frustrated.

Jarrod Bowen found the back of the net just before half-time, a goal that punished the hosts as the Englishman’s strike caused a fatal blow to Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes.

Arteta’s side failed to respond to the first-half header, with the uphill battle not made any easier by Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card.

On a dreary afternoon at the Emirates, here’s how the Arsenal squad rated.

Arsenal player ratings vs West Ham

David Raya – 6

Raya was let down for Bowen’s goal as the Spaniard had no chance to react to the forward’s finish as those ahead of him failed to spot the danger.

Riccardo Calafiori – 3

Calafiori came in to give Myles Lewis-Skelly a rest and the 18-year-old’s defensive presence was sorely missed. The summer signing was bullied on the flank by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who put the ball on a plate for Bowen after not being challenged by Calafiori. Really poor.

William Saliba – 6

Saliba’s performances rarely disappoint but a claim could be made over whether the Frenchman looks tired, he lacked attention to detail against West Ham, which is usually not a problem.

Gabriel Magalhaes – 5

Unusually, Gabriel was poor for Bowen’s goal, appearing to duck under the ball rather than clear the danger, allowing the England international to dart in behind unmarked.

Jurrien Timber – 6

Timber’s performance was not bad but more uneventful, the Dutchman frequently appeared to hold Nwaneri back by not offering an overlap, there could’ve been more to his game to mix things up.

Thomas Partey – 5

Partey was being dominated by West Ham’s midfield, the Ghana international looked incredibly slow and sluggish in all areas of his game.

Declan Rice – 4

One of Rice’s poorest performances in an Arsenal shirt. The former West Ham man had to do far better when tracking Bowen in the box for the visitor’s opening goal.

Martin Odegaard – 4

Odegaard just hasn’t looked at it this season and against West Ham, the captain was no different. It was a poor and uninfluential display from the Norweigan, who has to do a lot better.

Leandro Trossard – 6.5

It was definitely the right decision for Trossard to start on the left flank, something that the 30-year-old proved with his play in the wide areas. The Belgian put in some positive crosses that needed to be attacked.

Ethan Nwaneri – 7

A bright spark when on the ball but was limited by what his teammates were failing to offer around him.

Mikel Merino – 6

Merino was trusted with a start after his performance against Leicester and did well to run in behind but, it’s clear that the Spaniard is not a striker and would’ve arguably been a better option off the bench.

Substitutes

Oleksandr Zinchenko – 7

Some were shocked to see Zinchenko introduced however, the Ukrainian did at least bring some energy and desire into midfield, which was lacking early on.

Myles Lewis-Skelly – 2

A disastrous cameo for Lewis-Skelly as the teenager’s yellow card was upgraded to a red card after hauling Mohammed Kudus down to deny a goalscoring opportunity.

Raheem Sterling – N/A
