Arsenal fans were relieved to see their side return to winning ways by beating Shakhtar Donetsk.

Mikel Arteta watched his squad bounce back after their disappointing defeat to Bournemouth by winning in the Champions League

The Gunners earned their second three points in the new format against Shakhtar, winning 1-0 in a fairly uneventful fixture by Arsenal’s standards.

Goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk was responsible for the only goal of the game, knocking in Gabriel Martinelli’s effort to hand the hosts the win.

What Arsenal fans were singing against Shakhtar Donetsk

Arsenal fans would have gone home with smiles on their faces however, might have been slightly bored during the contest.

The Gunners performed with a lack of attacking spark, with the only goal being an own goal representing that.

It was so nearly 2-0 as in the second half as Leandro Trossard stepped up to take a penalty that was awarded by VAR.

The Belgian’s chance to score from the spot was saved by Riznyk although, that didn’t stop the Arsenal fans from singing.

A supporter posted a video on X that showed supporters serenading referee Benoit Bastien for awarding the penalty after a VAR review, with fans singing, “Can you ref us every week?”

It’s a chant that’s rarely heard at the Emirates, as the standard of refereeing in the Premier League is questioned most weeks due to inconsistency.

Mikel Arteta will be cautious of Premier League referees

In what has been a strong start to the season for Arsenal, one area of concern comes with regard to the discipline of Arteta’s squad.

In only eight games played so far in the Premier League, the Gunners have already had three red cards shown, with William Saliba the latest culprit.

Arsenal will not appeal Saliba’s red card, which will see the prized centre-back miss the crucial clash with Liverpool at the Emirates.

Given the nature of some of the red cards that Arsenal have received this term, Arteta will surely be having a stern conversation with his players, as playing with 10 men is not something that the boss will want to become accustomed to.
