Theo Walcott delighted by what ‘leader’ Declan Rice did after Arsenal loss vs Bournemouth

The mood at Arsenal will be low his morning, after Mikel Arteta’s side fell to their first defeat of the season so far against Bournemouth yesterday.

It was a dismal evening from start to finish for Arsenal, as not only did Mikel Arteta’s side lose against Bournemouth in this Premier League clash, but the Gunners will also now be without William Saliba against Liverpool, following his red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Arsenal’s performance was also littered with individual mistakes. Leandro Trossard’s error played Saliba into trouble, resulting in his dismissal. Later in the game, Jakub Kiwior’s underhit pass put David Raya in a difficult situation and ultimately led to the concession of a penalty.

All in all, it was a bad day at the office for the North London club, who were uncharacteristically poor at the back and struggled to generate opportunities in the final third.

A midfield trio of Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, and Thomas Partey lacked a creative spark, and Arteta was slammed for not using Ethan Nwaneri earlier in the match.

Arsenal icon Theo Walcott responds to Declan Rice statement

Rice spoke to the media in the wake of this defeat, and was honest about Arsenal’s shortcomings. The former West Ham United man admitted that: “We’ve let our standards slip and if you want to compete at the top you cannot let that happen.”

Former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott was covering the game as a pundit for Sky Sports (19/10/2024, 20:04), and offered his own thoughts on Rice’s comments.

Walcott said: “It was really refreshing to actually see a player come out and be open and honest about everything.

“At times, we interview the players and they say the same answers. You want to get a little bit more out of them. But I think he has really given an insight into how much he really cares and how much as a group of players they really care and want to achieve things. And I think it’s refreshing to see that.

“Declan, for me, he is growing into the stature where Arsenal want to see him, a captain, a leader, and you could see that in that interview there.”

Walcott himself was honest with his own thoughts on the Gunners’ performance, and insisted that Saliba deserved to be dismissed for his offence.

How Arsenal must respond to Bournemouth loss

Arsenal need to bounce back from this defeat immediately. Arteta’s side are aiming to be crowned Premier League champions this season, but the standard at the top end of the division is so high now that prospective winners cannot afford a poor run of form. This match needs to be a one-off blip.

The Gunners will take on Liverpool next time out in the Premier League, and on top of the missing Saliba, Martin Odegaard will likely still be absent for that fixture too.

Arteta must be bold with his team selection against the Reds. The Gunners need more quality in the final third on the pitch. The Spanish coach also has to find a way of coping without Saliba, and likely won’t turn to Kiwior again after his nightmare against the Cherries.
