Arsenal played through their final league phase match of the Champions League, taking on Girona in search of qualification in the top eight.

The Gunners, who had a few changes in the team, thought they took the lead as Riccardo Calafiori tucked home a neat move before being flagged for offside.

Shortly after, Arsenal went behind as a through ball found Arnaut Danjuma, who curled an effort beyond Neto – who was miles out of his goal.

Mikel Arteta’s side managed to work their way back into it though, firstly through Jorginho’s penalty and then took the lead after a stunning effort from Ethan Nwaneri.

While Arsenal exerted their dominance, Cristhian Stuani scored a fairytale goal, but it was ruled out for offside.

The drama didn’t stop there though, as Raheem Sterling’s missed penalty stopped the side from taking a two-goal lead.

In the end though, it was a win that secured a place in the round of 16, so with that said, here’s a look at a few winners and losers from the tie.

Winners from Arsenal clash with Girona

Ethan Nwaneri

Moving from strength to strength, Ethan Nwaneri continues to amaze Arsenal fans as he sparkles on the biggest stage once again.

The youngster was handed his first start in the Champions League – though it was his fifth appearance in the competition.

The Hale End academy graduate showed plenty of bright moments and truly capped it off with a stunning shot from range.

It seems certain that he is in for a bright future and it’s tough to argue that he won’t when he continues to perform like he does.

Jorginho

Starting in the midfield once again, Jorginho put in a performance that is so often expected of him in an Arsenal shirt.

Keeping it ticking in the central areas, the Italian international set the tempo and looked more than comfortable in possession.

Jorginho then went on to score from the penalty spot with his trademark hop, skip and jump.

Riccardo Calafiori

After his heroics against Wolves over the recent clash, Riccardo Calafiori was restored to the Arsenal starting side.

The defender thought he had scored the opener, though it went on to be ruled out for offside.

That didn’t deter Calafiori though, who looked a constant threat for the Gunners throughout the match.

Losers from Arsenal clash with Girona

Neto

Making his debut in the tie, Neto looked far from comfortable for Arsenal between the sticks and didn’t do his chances of earning another start much good.

The Brazilian almost gave away the ball with his first touch as he failed to clear the ball and appeared to get stuck in two minds.

While he got away with that first one, the second chance didn’t go his way as an error from Neto gave away a goal.

A through ball saw the goalkeeper exposed one-on-one, but he stepped out of his box and was stuck in no man’s land, getting beaten with an effort from range.

Thomas Partey

Starting at right-back once again, Thomas Partey was given an opportunity to prove his quality and versatility once again.

It wasn’t the best of displays though, as he was caught out of position for the opener in the match and failed to catch up.

He was then hooked off at half-time in favour of Jurrien Timber.

Mikel Merino

It was a bit of a quiet night for Mikel Merino, who perhaps struggled to make an impact in the areas he would’ve hoped.

The midfielder could’ve got involved more in the final third with some late runs to land opportunities in and around the box.

Raheem Sterling

Starting on the left flank, Raheem Sterling was given a chance to show more of his bright ability that has been seen in short bursts.

He failed to create much though, struggling to have the same impact as he has shown on the right wing in his cameos.

Unfortunately, it was made slightly worse when the Chelsea loanee stepped up to take a last-gasp penalty, only to miss it.
