Wayne Rooney has revealed that he is a huge fan of Viktor Gyokeres and was so impressed by his performance against Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal have reached the Champions League final for the first time since 2005 following an impressive 1-0 win over Atletico.

Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the game, but there were several impressive displays, with Gyokeres really shining for the Gunners.

After the match, Rooney sang the praises of the Swede and explained why he is such a key player for Mikel Arteta’s team.

Wayne Rooney was so impressed by Viktor Gyokeres’ performance against Atletico Madrid, despite the striker not getting on the scoresheet.

When asked about him, Rooney told Prime Sports Video: “He’s been criticised this season, Gyokeres, maybe he’s not as pleasing on the eye as some of the other centre forwards around the world.

“But what he does do is a lot of the dirty work, and it’s so important to the team. He obviously didn’t get his goal tonight, but he played a massive role in Arsenal winning this game.”

The 27-year-old worked tirelessly in attack for the North London club and did so well, bringing others into play at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal Insider gave Gyokeres an 8/10 for his performance against Atletico, and he was undoubtedly one of the team’s best performers on the night.

Rooney was not the only pundit seriously impressed by Gyokeres, as Alan Shearer says the striker was ‘superb’ during the 1-0 win.

“Other than that miss, his centre forward player tonight has been superb, his running off the ball, his hold-up play for his team,” Shearer told Prime Video Sport.

“Taking the knocks, faking those runs, he really has been exceptional. Exactly the type of Arsenal have needed from him tonight, something to build on.”
