The Champions League was back on Tuesday evening.

Of course, all eyes were on San Mames in the early kick-off slot as Arsenal beat Athletic Club 2-0 to get off to a winning start.

However, after the Arsenal game finished, focus switched a few hundred miles south as Real Madrid took on Marseille in the Champions League.

Arsenal fans may have been intrigued to see how Madrid got on here as one of the favourites for the tournament, while there was also a former Arsenal player in action.

Indeed, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made his Champions League return here, and he rolled back the years in one regard.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is still absolutely rapid

Aubameyang was always known for his pace at Arsenal, and, even now, at the age of 36, he’s still one of the fastest players in the game.

Indeed, according to UEFA’s stats, Aubameyang was the fastest player on the pitch on Tuesday evening as Marseille faced Real Madrid.

In fact, Aubameyang was recorded as being quicker than both Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe during the game.

At the age of 36 you’d expect Aubameyang to have lost his speed, but he’s still so fast.

Back at Arsenal, his top speed was recorded at 36.7 km/h, and while he’s not hit those heights on Tuesday, 35.8 km/h is still seriously speedy.

Aubameyang may have been the fastest player on the pitch on Tuesday, but he was far from the most effective.

Indeed, Aubameyang couldn’t make much happen as Marseille lost 2-1, and the stats show just how ineffective he was.

Aubameyang may have been clocked as being faster than Kylian Mbappe on the day, but Mbappe is the one who had the last laugh as he scored two decisive goals to take Los Blancos to their first European win of the season.
