Aaron Ramsey says Arsenal withdrew contract offer after everything was agreed

Former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey has come out and claimed that everything was agreed for him to extend his contract at the Emirates, but the Gunners board then changed their mind.

The Welshman joined Arsenal as a teenager from Cardiff all the way back in 2008. He snubbed Manchester United to sign for us, and he became a real star for Arsenal over the years.

After Arsene Wenger’s departure, however, everything changed.

Ramsey entered the final year of his Arsenal contract after Unai Emery became our manager.

The midfielder played regularly under the Spaniard and was very impressive. Everyone expected a new contract for the Welshman to be a formality, but that didn’t happen.

Ramsey claims now that he had agreed a contract offer from Arsenal, but the Gunners board then pulled the deal. He then decided to sign for Juventus on a free transfer.

He told The Times: “It all happened… I agreed to a contract they proposed. (Then ) things went quiet for a few weeks. I was telling my agent, ‘let’s do it’, then all of a sudden the contract was no longer there. So there was nothing to sign or agree.

“It was a difficult start for a few months with Unai [Emery]. As the season was going on, I was playing more and playing really well. Then January came and I had to make a decision whether I carried on and saw what happened or whether I agreed [to sign] somewhere [else].”

The Insider’s View:

It’s really difficult to judge if Arsenal got this decision right.

As a player, Ramsey’s quality is undeniable. He can play anywhere across central midfield, can score and create goals, works incredibly hard, and on his day, he can boss the game.

However, injuries have been really cruel to Ramsey over the years. Even after leaving Arsenal, he spent a lot of time away from action – 34 games to be exact, as per Transfermarkt.

That probably justifies Arsenal’s decision, but it still was really, really sad to see him leave in 2019.
