Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Arsenal to sign Ivan Toney.
According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal are plotting a January raid to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who could be available for around £80 million.
If there is one area of Mikel Arteta’s squad which is lacking then it is up front. Gabriel Jesus is a fantastic player who brings so much to how the Gunners play, but he simply isn’t prolific enough to fire the north London club to a Premier League title.
Equally, Hale End academy graduate Eddie Nketiah is hard-working and fulfils a useful purpose in the squad, but he isn’t an elite-level player.
It is incredibly difficult to win a title without a top class goalscorer spearheading the attack. Of course, players of such calibre in that position aren’t easy to find or cheap to acquire.
Toney may be of that level. He bagged twenty goals in the Premier League last season. However, the 27-year-old has never before had to shoulder the burden of leading the line for a side chasing the game’s major honours.
Toney backed to bolster title bid
Despite this relative lack of experience, Gabby Agbonlahor is convinced that Toney is the man that Arsenal need. Speaking on TalkSport, the former Aston Villa attacker said, “whoever is serious about this title challenge, go and get Ivan Toney.”
If Arteta agrees, and believes that the once-capped England man can take Arsenal to that next, silverware-winning level, then he needs to push to get a deal done at the earliest opportunity.
Given the start Arsenal have made to the new season, the level of quality they have throughout the squad, and the experienced they will have gained from coming so close to glory last season, the Gunners have the opportunity to do something special this time around. If would be unforgivable to miss out on that chance due to a failure to add the final piece of the puzzle in January.
