Alan Shearer has made his prediction for Arsenal’s clash against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners will be desperate to respond to their underwhelming draw against Manchester City last time out by taking all three points in the north-east.

Arsenal currently sit five points behind league leaders Liverpool after five matches, and cannot afford to slip further behind the Merseysiders at this early stage of the season.

Newcastle won this fixture 1-0 last season, and while the Magpies aren’t in electric form at the moment, the North Londoners always seem to struggle on Tyneside.

Newcastle have conceded just three goals, but also scored just three goals so far this season.

The Magpies have been resolute defensively, but have struggled to get going offensively without their former talismanic striker, Alexander Isak.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta has been criticised for his conservative tactics and team selections in big matches in recent weeks.

This combination of factors points to Sunday’s encounter being an uninspiring game, which will be determined by the smallest of margins.

Speaking to the Metro, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer backed Eddie Howe’s team to overcome Arsenal at St. James’ Park.

“Huge game for two sides that both drew at the weekend,” Shearer said.

“I think with Newcastle at home, I’m going to go with Newcastle to beat Arsenal in a bad-tempered game.”

Arsenal’s games against Newcastle have certainly been ‘bad-tempered’ in recent years, particularly since Anthony Gordon scored a controversial goal against the Gunners in November 2023.

How should Arsenal approach the Newcastle game?

This will be an extremely difficult game for Arsenal.

Newcastle have conceded the fewest shots and the fewest expected goals in the Premier League so far this season.

While the Gunners should be able to contain the Magpies very well, it’ll be a matter of whether they can find a breakthrough against such a sturdy defence.

Arteta’s team have been excellent at getting into the opposition’s penalty box, but they’ve struggled to convert that dominance into clear-cut chances so far this season.

Barcelona had to rely on two wonder goals from Marcus Rashford to emerge from St. James’ Park with all three points, and the Gunners may need one of their own stars to deliver similarly magical moments to secure the victory.
