Alan Shearer believes that Unai Emery should push Mikel Arteta really close to winning the Premier League Manager of the Season award.

Emery has enjoyed yet another superb campaign at Aston Villa, helping them qualify for the Champions League and reach the Europa League final.

Be honest. Did Unai Emery deserve more time at Arsenal or was he rightly sacked?

The former Arsenal coach has continued to do a remarkable job at Villa Park, and this season could see him end their 30-year wait for silverware.

Now, Shearer has hailed the Spanish manager and explained why he should rival Arteta for Manager of the Year.

Alan Shearer says Unai Emery has been as good as Mikel Arteta

Alan Shearer is backing Unai Emery to push Mikel Arteta ‘really, really close’ to winning the Manager of the Year award.

Both managers could achieve remarkable feats this season, with Arsenal on the verge of the double and Villa close to ending their trophy drought too.

Emery failed at Arsenal, but at Villa, it has been a very different story, and now Shearer thinks he should be rewarded for the job he has done.

Shearer told The Rest Is Football: “I know if Arsenal win the league, it’ll be Mikel Arteta winning Manager of the Year, but Unai Emery has to push him really, really close.

“The job he’s done this season, getting Villa into the Champions League, hardly spending anything and on the brink of another Europa League title. I mean, he’s some manager.

“He’s done a fabulous job again for Aston Villa, to go again to play every single Saturday or Sunday and Tuesday or Wednesday as they’ve done in Europe is some going. He’s done a marvellous job.”

However, if Arteta is to win the Premier League title, it would be him who undoubtedly deserves the award, given the journey the club has been on to win the league.

To end the North London club’s 22-year wait for the title would be a seriously incredible achievement and he is now just two games away.
